Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

@Mukora
I thought it might be one of the very few properties an adaptation of which Michael Bay would more comfortably fit.

wow i just randomly found the trailer for XMA that was once deleted. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJgybGvodqA
and it looks bland. im not feeling it
Thor 3 probably won't get a cast list until early next year. Until then I don't think we'll be seeing any info on it. For now we're probably just going to get Civil War stuff. A month or two from now we might get some Doctor Strange info but that's probably all we're getting for the rest of the year.
I just see the rosters as a marketing thing. I expect in the film itself it'll take a bit before who's in what group is finalized and get team shots. And then after that there'll probably be roster changes by the end of the movie. Like maybe by the end Black Panther's like "I done with this Civil War stuff, I'm going home."
I hope they use Valkyrie in Ragnarok.
Some of the concept art they had for her in Dark World was awesome.

Regarding Widow apparently being on Iron Man's side, I maintain that there won't be stable sides at all. And all this concept art and apparent leaks will turn out to all just be referring to a specific clash that happens early in the movie. It's very possible that by the end of the movie the characters who were consistently on one side of the conflict from beginning to end will be outnumbered by the characters who either switched sides or stop participating in the conflict altogether.
I did notice two interesting things about the concept art though. The first is that Scarlet Witch is absent and yet Sharon Carter is present. Since we know she's in the movie, my only guess is that she isn't directly involved in the superhero conflict and is a neutral party from beginning to end.
The second is that random jet in the background of Captain America's team. Unless I'm missing something obvious...who the heck is flying that jet?
The way I see it there are two possibilities. One is that this is actually a way to squeeze Coulson's crew from Agents of SHIELD into the movie (even if they don't want to have Coulson himself, there's no reason the other characters can't show up as random SHIELD agents). The other, perhaps more interesting option, is that the person flying the jet is Carol Danvers.
Sure the role doesn't have an announced casting yet, but she could be in her flight suit the whole time (assuming the role hasn't been cast in secret). Or alternatively they could just film the one or two scenes we see her face and do any voiceover work during the inevitable reshoots, which Marvel always plans on having anyways.
Widow has agency as a character, she's free as an individual to come to her own conclusions regardless of where it puts her friends. It's a big conflict with ramifications that should should take priority over that. Likewise I hope Rhodey's reason for being Pro-Reg isn't just because he's Tony's Black Best Friend and beholden to Leading White Man's Important Opinion, but (more likely because Marvel's not that dumb) because his military background influences his opinions so he genuinely sees eye to eye with being Pro-Reg.
What makes me scratch my head more is her character development in TWS seemed to point Anti-Reg* , but you could just as well argue that it's actually in a Pro-Reg direction too* . Also because everyone else who was in TWS came away becoming Anti-Reg. It's possible she may switch sides back to Cap as the original rumor suggested, but I really hope it's because she personally prefers his opinion, not because he's her friend.
@stingerbrg Yeah I also suspect the team setup is mostly a cheap marketing ploy and the actual film will be more nuanced (not just because I think the writers have shown themselves to be more competent than that, but because such a black and white conflict would result in a very bad movie).
Also, surprised Sharon is being featured so prominently this time around.

Is it too much to ask that they keep the technobabble and sci-fi tropes to a minimum (please, no more spaceships) and focus more on the fantasy aspects of Thor this time around? We've already been introduced to the Clarke's Third Law aspect of the setting in Thor 1, so we already understand the principle of the setting going in for this third film. I do NOT want to see Selvig pop out of some hole in the ground and start spouting off lecture after lecture about how all the awesome shit works, thankyou very much.

Given that both sides have a character who could be described as a Black Best Friend, I do hope that at least one of them either switches sides or abandons the conflict completely.
Rhodes would probably be the better candidate for this since the pro-reg side likely have a greater ability to exit the conflict, since they can just abide by the accords in general without helping to hunt down Captain America (assuming the accords technically allow such an action).

I recall that in the big argument scene in Avengers 1 it's Widow that springs to Fury's defense about using SHIELD to contain and neutralize threats before they happen - she was the only person who was actually on his side, IIRC.
She may have been against keeping SHIELD around after realizing it had been thoroughly corrupted by HYDRA, but that doesn't mean she was against what SHIELD was supposed to be doing - which is what Stark will be doing in Civil War.
I don't know about that. Personality-wise, Sam and Rhodey are probably the least likely people on their sides to switch sides: Sam is incredibly loyal to Cap, and while Rhodey is willing to go against Tony if he thinks Stark needs to learn a lesson of some kind, from what we know about him he's likely to be in total agreement about what Stark's group is representing.

Just imagine a scene where Darcy is like "wait, this makes no sense" and Selvig literally pops out of a manhole and starts technobabbling. it'd be great.
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."![]()

Uggh. Why do you hate me? Anyways, I think they can give Selvig, Jane, Darcy, and all of "Midgard" a break for this movie, especially due to the very recent events of Age Of Ultron and the soon to come Civil War. So have this one take place entirely in Thor's world.

Natasha doesn't choose sides based on friendship, she chooses based on what ideologically makes sense to her.
She's known Fury longer than she's known Steve, she trusts him to make the right calls, but she sides with Cap when it's time to decide whether to bring down SHIELD.
She's deeply enamored with Bruce but she still throws him into the pit.
So if she decides Tony's side is more well-reasoned, and that it requires fighting Steve, that's what she'll do.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.
