Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up]I wouldn't mind if they stuck with the father in the story, but James Gunn said that they won't.

That was pretty thoroughly debunked. The only reason people even thought it was gonna happen is because John Ridley is doing a show for Marvel and his most recent show had a Muslim woman as one of the major characters. That was seriously the justification behind the rumor. I guess once you write one Muslim girl that's all you can ever write again.

That happens a lot in the Rumor Mill. Hopes turn to speculation and speculation turns to "sourced" confirmation quicker than you can blink.

  • ALICE: Bob thinks the Dude does great work with hamster balls. It's, like, the Dude's thing. Hamster balls.
  • JACK: Alice says the Dude's thing is hamster balls. Like, all his works have hamster balls. This one's probably going to have hamster balls.
  • SARA: Jack says the Dude's working on a project about hamster balls.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think James Gunn confirmed that Star-Lord's father will not be the same person in the movies as in the comics.

Star Lord's father is described as an angel of light. I'm assuming Celestial until proven otherwise.

The logistics of Human-Celestial coupling would certainly be interesting.

Well Zeus did something similar in Greek mythology. He appeared as a pillar of light and enveloped a woman thus making her pregnant somehow. I'm guessing the thing with Quill is a reference to that.

Well they did say GOTG 2 was about fathers...

Fathers? In plural? That is good, it raises the chance Phyla and Moondragon are included. They are the only other GoG characters with important fathers I can think about. Then again, I guess they could be just talking about Starlor's father and Thanos.

Theory: that alien woman who Quill forgot was still in his ship turns up pregnant.

[up][up][up] It could also be a reference to developing just precisely how screwed up Gamora has been left with Thanos as a (sort of) father figure. We saw it a little in GOTG but they could probably mine more out of it, especially if Nebula returns.

Zeus made women pregnant in a lot of bizarre ways. He had kind of a reverse bestiality kick where he liked to have sex while being an animal, such as a bull or lion. IIRC, he once even had sex as a cloud.

That's when he wasn't just doing the deed himself, impregnating part of his own body and giving birth to his own damn offspring.

Zeus was into pretty much any kink you can name, with the sole exception being "Having sex with his wife, the goddess of marital fidelity."

Just realized something about MCU Vision. He was born from the Cradle (which looks kind of like a cocoon), he has an Infinity Gem installed into his forehead. He "sides with life" which is everything Thanos is against, was "birthed" by a group (or "enclave" if you will) of heroes, etc.....

[up]Which 616 hero's origin sounds awfully similar to this?....

Well, yeah. That is what I've said. Apparently there are, at last, two important 'fathers' in this story. One of them is pretty much guarantied to be Starlord's. The other could be Thanos.

[up]Warlock, no? But, really, you should just state your conclusion. Not everyone here reads comics or bother with the most obscure ones. You want to take that conversation somewhere, so just go there.

[up]You're right. I sometimes forget that not everyone here dabbles in the source material or the trope pages for the source material,......or the wiki info for the source material found on comicvine and the like. Anyways yes. That's what I saw in my fridge.

[up]Given the liberties the MCU has taken with some characters and their origins, I'd say there's a fair likelihood.

[up]Warlock may not be safe either if he gets the Soul Gem like in 616. My guess is either one could get the honor of being Thanos's MCU Arch-Enemy.......for all of one movie before Thanos gets Killed Off for Real to make room for moar Loki. wild mass guess

[up][up]

Encalve, a group of scientists, used their resources to construct what they claimed as a "man of the future". They were wrong in hoping their product, Him, would benefit their goal to conquer humanity. Him, because he was pure like MCU's Vision, quickly found out his creators were up to no good so he destroyed them. After that he left for the stars until he ran into High Revolutionary, whose world was invaded by Man-Beast. Not knowing his purpose, Him decided to protect Counter-Earth. This marked the moment he was given the name “Adam Warlock bestowed by High Revolutionary. The soul gem was a "baptismal” gift. After beating Man-Beats he went back to drifting off in space, doing good from there on out.

Adam Warlock's purpose is pretty simple. To be the prefect "human" because sin is nonexistent to his existence. In that sense Vision already fulfills this role as someone who stands above all the vices we know of. He only seeks out virtues. Meanwhile, there is a counter-part called Magus; a evil vision from somewhere far in the future. Magus ruled over the Universal Church of Truth, being so dangerous Thanos considered Magus a threat to his own schemes. Universal Church of Truth is mainly a Guardians of the Galaxy rouge. Adam Warlock eventually created the Infinity Watch with Gamora, Pip, Moondragon, Drax the Destroyer, and Thanos. These characters fit a Guaranis of the Galaxy, Avengers, or Ms Marvel movie more than anything else.

Power set wise Vision is the best reflection thus far.
