Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I'm implying that because people have stated that AOS wasn't canon
One of those people being Joss Whedon. Although it was in more of a "it may be canon, but I choose to ignore it" kinda way.

Joss Whedon NEVER said that Ao S wasn't canon. He only said that as far as the movies are concerned, Coulson is dead, because him turning up again would be too complicated to explain.

Ao S is constructed in a way that you don't have to watch it for the movies. But that is true for every TV show AND it is true for most of the movies. You can easily skip Got G or The incredible Hulk and still watch the Avengers movies. That doesn't mean that the puzzle pieces are not part of an overall continuity.

[up][up]Joss only said that Coulson was still dead to the Avengers, that's all. Not that AOS was out of continuity.

And saying anything has "levels of continuity," automatically implies that the lower level is not "really" canon, much like the EU wasn't really canon in Star Wars. And I'm sorry for bringing up a different conversation, but I've had this kind of conversation before, where everyone goes around in circles, because there's really no evidence at all.

If you want to believe in "levels of continuity," fine, but there's nothing that supports it.

I think as long as there is no instance in which the movies blatantly contradict one of the show the was The Winter Soldier did with the tie-in comic, we should assume that they are on the same level.

omg you people coerced AOS is of no significance, lower continuity, or not cannon at all are just as bad as the commentators on IGN -____-'! this is TV trope!!! we of all people should know how to lower continuity determine canonicity.

AOS is indeed part of the MCU. it is indeed crucial to the MCU, being as necessary as what happens in Hell's Kitchen or on the sliver screen. most importantly you watch each product for the characters as they interact with Marvel lore. there is nothing that says otherwise, so please stop.

now for M Arvel's Most Wanted. without actual details I think there is no reason to speculate apart from the fact Bobby almost died so Hunter wouldn't. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fw_TcJkUWh4

the effect to that cause = hospitalized

Adrianne Palicki: She's dealing with not having the use of her knee. She's missing part of a lung. There's going to be a lot of stuff she's having to deal with.

She can't "can't do this anymore." By working for SHIELD she put her life on the line, while it also brought back a chance to start over with Hunter.

How would they spin off both characters from there is up in the air. I wouldn't mind a prequel either to widen their depth to fully rounded characters rather than secondary ones that happen to have bigger personalities, quirks, and baggage than you normally except. seeing more of them in greater details helps build our connection to them. by that notion the showrunners are saying they can stand on their own merit. would this mean for the first time we get to see Bobbi and Hunter work outside Coulson's team or SHIELD in general? who else could be involved? where would it take place? when does it take place? what are the conflicts? how are they resolved? etc

She is missing part of her lung? Where is this coming from?

In any case, I could totally see a series, which is more a procedural, in which every episode shows Bobbi and Hunter having to go after some sort of criminal which they have to take down one way or another. They could make the pilot about them finally getting rid of Ian Quinn (seriously, what happened to that guy?).

the bullet went right above her boob.

Ian Quinn is MIA. he fled after Garret went insane. he has Gravitonium, so Dr. Hall also can't come back unless Quinnn appears. right now him being a villain for the spin off makes sense because it automatically implies the return of Dr. Hall and both have plenty of time to make an impact without being limited by everything else that happens in AOS season 3.

however, Dr. Hall is very much connected to Fitz and Simmons, being their role model teacher. that relationship would also benefit them for AOS.

so... i dunnno

There was an interview with Adrianne Palicki where she revealed this.

Because everyone in-universe calls it HYDRA in all caps because it's supposed to be like an evil version of SHIELD.

This.

It's Fun with Acronyms that they forgot to make into an acronym. Somebody really wanted their initials to spell out "Hydra," but then they were all too busy doing ridiculous double-fisted salutes and growing two more heads to finish naming the organization.tongue

To be fair, I don't think anyone ever called it H.Y.D.R.A., unlike S.H.I.L.D.. So I guess it is more like Nazis really like their capslock.

In comparison, the comic's H.A.M.M.E.R. was explicitly an acronym, even if no one ever get around to make up what it meant.

HYDRA wanting to be all big and flashy shouldn't be surprising given how they slapped their logo on so much of their gear. tongue

Interesting. I was expecting them to reveal Willis Stryker first.

[up][up]

Also I remember seeing somewhere that HYDRA explicitly isn't supposed to stand for anything. It's just that way because Strucker is a Large Ham or something.

I figured it was all caps because all caps denotes yelling.

Should Hydra or Ten Rings enter Hell's Kitchen and militarize the neighborhood's police force once Defenders comes out? Essitionally they transform mundane crimes into otherwordly ones, therefore giving birth to all the wacky super-powered rouges you know of.

vs

Should the Hand or Kun-Zi fight for control over Hell Kitchen? Essentially Mortal Kombat-esque characters try to use Hell's Kitchen as the landing point gateway for their realms.

Black Mamba (Seprente Society), Black Mariah (drug lord), Pagon (skrull), Ferocia (a freaking furry), Frenzy (a mutant), Lady Bullseye (duh),Nightshade (werewolf scientist), Malachi (magical chic), Ninotchka (assassin), Troubleshooter (secret agent for Corporation) are Luke's main female rouges.

Black Mariah makes the most sense. Really the annucmenent of a female big bad, Afircan American one at that, should be taken far more seriously because I do not think this has ever happened before in live action for a comicbook series in general for the past 15 years. An actress who gets to show all the depth of an actor playing a big fat evil person. i cant think of any female antagonist playing something equivalent to King Pin

It could also be a possible Race Lift similar to Claire Temple.

Anyway I'm just really excited to see a (probably erudite) black female lead villain. Having complex and diverse villains is just as important for representation as it is for heroes.

[up][up][up] Not having anyone other than white be on screen is basically saying only white people can play these roles. meanwhile when a POC shows up its almost always secondary role with low impact. well daredevil avoided that as much as person of interest

Daredevil also made all of its non-white villains stereotypes.

It's important to have Asian baddies but it's equally important to have Asian baddies who aren't martial arts experts or wise old women or involved with sweatshops, I mean jesus

(Also jesus christ is I COULD SECRETLY SPEAK ENGLISH THE WHOLE TIME a trope yet because if not it should be)

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.
