Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I stand by point that while the twist was in itself clever, it's a shame they had to ruin an occasion to modernize the Mandarin for it (please do not answer this I do not wish to start this argument again), and regardless of what you think of the Mandarin OR the twist, Killian was a really crappy villain.

Can we nip this in the bud before we go on another three pages?

  • sigh* I shouldn't have included the twist in the list...but other than the skydiving scene (which count as action scene), I couldn't come up with any other moment in the movie which was truly memorable. Well, at least not in a good way...(in my headcanon Tony lied when he told Bruce that the arc reactor is gone).

[up][up] Agreed. Let's discuss how they can work in Phil Urich. I picture this sort of scene:

???: Not gonna lie to ya, son. Your writing's got spunk. And I don't say that kind of thing very often. What was your name again?

Phil Urich: Phil Urich.

(Beat)

???: "Urich"? You're not, by any chance, related to—

Phil: Ben Urich? Yeah, I'm his nephew.

???: Well, no wonder I'm loving this. What your uncle had, you've got yourself. Not many people were like him. If he wasn't dead as a doornail, I would've hired him at the first second I heard he was available.

Phil: So does that mean...

???: You're hired, Urich.

Phil: Well, thank you very much, Mr....?

???: Jameson. J. Jonah Jameson. Welcome to the Daily Bugle, son.

So the question now is, who should play Phil Urich?

Michael B. Jordan?

(Dodges another petrol bomb.)

...Geez.

@Swanpride: I take it you disliked Tony removing the arc reactor too?

See, I think even if you don't like the twist, that scene of Ben Kingsley coming out of the bathroom after dropping a stink bomb is just hilarious. Because, well, Ben Kingsley is talking about dropping a stink bomb. Kingsley is just hilarious on the role.

Memorable scenes from IM3:

  • Yeah, the skydiving scene was awesome.
  • The scene where Tony told the kid, "Where's my sandwich?"
  • The scene where the kid tries to guilt trip Tony and he's like, "Bye!"
  • The ending, where Bruce Banner admits to falling asleep in the beginning.
  • Pepper Potts apologizing for killing the main villain by saying, "I was just so...violent."

Arnim Zola in Winter Soldier is a great moment.

Damn, that scene creeped me out a little.

Arnim Zola is like Rocket and Groot. It's a ridiculous concept on paper. You really need to put a lot of work into it to sell it without breaking plausibility. The character's visual presentation, the atmosphere of how they're introduced, the voice, the personality, the emotional impact of their first scene and how it interacts with the general tone the film is trying to produce, etc. It's not so much the WHY that matters but the HOW.

But when it works, it is glorious. It is glorious because it's a ridiculous concept. It is glorious because you know f*cking damn well that it's impossible but you believe every moment of it anyway.

Bucky's costume in the Winter Soldier was just amazing. I mean, it was pretty much the Winter Soldier outfit from the Brubaker run. Amazing.

[up][up][up][up]That and to a lesser extent GOTG proves that even the seemingly "zanier" concepts from 616 can be preserved but made effective in the adaptation process (I'm looking at you, 20th Century Fox).

That reminds me of another wonderful moment that no one mentioned yet. It may have been a short expository flashback, but seeing a fucking CELESTIAL in action was just beautiful to the point of tears.

So Marvel's big push on Inhumans for All New Marvel sounds like a response to the MCU though the source material has been pushing them up for a while, but never to this amount.

The MCU's fish pills are the Terrigen Cloud's replacement. So... both mediums use a similar concept. I wonder how much Inhumans are going to effect these overall verses in the long run

[up]I think the Terragen-infused fish products is less the MCU's version of the Inhumanity event and more a way to have Inhumans start to pop up on the show while keeping the door open for the real deal in the movies.

[up] AOS is still part of the MCU, though. I mean, it's not "less real". I mean, in terms of the movies and the Netflix shows, it's less important, but it's not any less real.

I didn't laugh at that scene. Maybe because I was puzzled and wondering what was going on, but I didn't find it particularly funny.

Anyway, on an unrelated note, what can we expect from the Jessica Jones series? I have never read the comic.

AOS is still part of the MCU, though. I mean, it's not "less real". I mean, in terms of the movies and the Netflix shows, it's less important, but it's not any less real.

AOS is on a slightly lower continuity, though - it's subservient to the films in terms of continuity, but the films aren't obligated to abide by the shows' continuity as much as we might wish that they should (I really want to see AOS characters in the Inhumans movie, or Matt or Power Man and Iron Fist in another film).

The Netflix shows deal with this in a very smart way by taking place in a niche that nothing else in the MCU is directly dealing with, so there's little overlap.

But that why, say, while AOS had it that all of HYDRA's hierarchy was eradicated in one day except for Strucker and eventually Ward's ragtag group, Ant-Man then came along and casually had a random HYDRA bigwig be a minor antagonist.

AOS now has to write around that (probably by having the guy be a part of Ward's group, though I hope not), as apposed to the films having to write around AOS.

@Theokal3

Y'know, the more I think about it, the more I think that the twist in Iron Man 3 really should've been saved for an MCU interpretation of The Sentry. It makes sense if you read about how Stan Lee conceived him.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to say I'm not sure either.

I mean, did they say they would up the darker side of stuff than Daredevil did?

I'm really not keen about the possibility that they'll drop F-Bombs...

I mean, I get the Alias comics had F-words, but still...

For Jessica Jones, I'm expecting "Veronica Mars with superpowers".
