Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

@Swanpride: Nope. In fact, I don't know how dark I'd actually call scene. Fisk has done worse, and with better lightning.

Oh, one of the highlights of the series: when Karen shot Wesley. I mean, O_O

Yeah it's made up of old licensing images (Which is why Falcon and Scarlet Witch are in their old costumes). Still, it looks really cool!

What official promotional images have there been for Civil War? The only one I'm aware from outside of logos is that rendition by a concept artist of Steve and Tony fighting with their helmets on.

[up] Honestly? I don't think they had many aside from the logos.

Man, they really are keeping us in the dark regarding "Civil War", huh?

Speaking of keeping things in the dark, did anyone have a hard time seeing what Daredevil's red costume looked like? Well, here's a better look at it...sort of.

They said the costume would evolve more in season 2, right?

Lol...when I saw the poster with Cap's side I was first all "wait a moment...someone is missing...where is Ant-m...oh, there he is".

Honestly, I don't get why so many fans dislike the current costume. I think it looks great - well, for a Daredevil costume. I didn't think that it was even possible to make that thing not look ridiculous. But the dark red and the explanation why the costume looks the way it does works for me.

Still like the Affleck Daredevil a little more. I think a lot of it comes down to the nose and jaw. It's got a bit of the same problem Cap's Avengers outfit had.

In fact, Im going to ask you rght now: what is the best suit in the marvel universe so far?

Im going with Antman and yellowjacker, they really look cool, especially the helmet, Falcon looks cool

For the villians...I will go with Loki, who manage to look impresive and Bucky who look cool, even when his arm feels fake everything they take a close shot of him

The least impresive for the heros is Nataha and for the villians...Im going with whatisface in Iron man 2, his armor was unimpresive as him, bah

I really liked the Ant Man and Yellowjacket suits, yes.

Falcon looks pretty great as well. The Vision is dead on.

With the exception of maybe one or two suits, the MCU has been absolutely phenomenal with the costuming. Probably my absolute favorite of them is Cap's WWII outfit. It's just such a good adaptation of the comic design with how practical it is.

I generally like all of the MCU's costuming. Maybe a few exceptions but its normally good.

Ant-Man and Yellowjacket are probably my favourites (also while it was incomplete, the brief glimpse we got of the new Wasp suit looked cool.) as I do like that style. The Asgardian aesthetic is pretty good, although it can be unimaginative at points and they really need to make a decision on sleeves. Sif gets points for having actual armour on a female fantasy(ish) character, although its not perfect.

Falcon is quite a diversion from his comics look but I quite like his new costume. Vision was always going to look uncanny but I think they pulled it off quite well (also the cape moment was blink-and-you'll-miss-it but gold).

On the bad side, Whiplash was just awful. Deathlok showed the TV budget bad (which Daredevil manages to avoid). Hawkeye was an attempt at realism but just looked bland, although I did like his Ao U coat.

I think Whiplash's is the only costume I actively dislike. Most work fine for me. Designs which stuck out to me were Caps WW costume, Ant-man, though mostly I liked the explanation for it, the triangle Iron Man armour (what? I think it looks better than the stupid circle, no matter what is more true to the comics), and Visions design. The way the deliberately put him in uncanny Valley territory just works for me. Also, Peggy's blue and white costume with the red hat. That's how you make an outfit iconic! Honorable mentions for Avengers Hulk. Not really a costume, but a really good design.

Oh, I nearly forgot: I really disliked the neon stripes on Black Widows Age of Ultron outfit. Yes, her black overall is not very flashy, but that is the point.

Almost forgot: I also really liked Cap's Black Suit in Winter Soldier. In general, his costuming is great to look at.

A lot of the characters listed I agree with, but here are some that I like and dislike

Like

  • The Mandarin: Before that disappointing twist (though good for story telling is still disappointing), the Mandarin looks like a pretty cool modern update of his comic book counterpart. I mean from the first trailer of Iron Man 3 alone every fan was hyped for the film just to see The Mandarin in action knowing how he is Iron Man's arch enemy.

  • Everybody in Guardians of the Galaxy: Can't really complain about the costumes in the movie, they all look great. Nova Corps police like uniform fit the space police theme. Ronan, though not wearing green, has a costume that is 95% accurate to what his comic counterpart look like. The main heroes look great from that space helmet Star Lord wears to Drax tattoos that cover his body to the seductive looking costume Gamora wears that I admit is better then her skimpy one piece costume in the comics.

  • Daredevil: Let's face it, it is pretty good realistic take on his red costume. My only gripe is probably the eyeholes (he is blind, he doesn't really need it since most of the season he was wearing a mask that cover his eyes).

  • Thor's Age of Ultron costume: Honestly I prefer Thor to be sleeveless and without that chainmail arms. It make him look more like his comic self. Now all we need is him wearing the helmet.

  • Kurse: That is a freakin badass design. He comes off as a scary juggernaut ready to fuck everybody up the moment he appears in the movie.

Dislike

  • Malekith: Its bad enough the character is underwelming, but they could of at least have him look more like his comic book incarnation. I couldn't even tell if his face is in half for god sakes.

  • Justin Hammer: Prefer him as an old man attempting at being hip with the new generation.

  • Mockingbird: All black? No white? No goggles? Though one could argue a lot of the costume design for characters in Agents of Shield is pretty lame.

Random question: Excluding action scenes, what do you think were the best moments in phase 2?

I vote for the Mandarin reveal (what, I like it!), Loki grieving over Frigga, Loki on Odin's throne, Steve visiting Peggy, Steve recognizing Bucky (yeah, it happens during an action scene, but the point is not the action, is it?), Natasha uploading all the SHIELD files, Starlord's dance, Rockets drunken speech, "We are Groot", Dancing Groot, The party (the whole thing, from start to finish), the wood chopping scene, the talk between Vision and Ultron and Casey getting her ugly hare.

[up][up][up]Daredevil might not need the eyeholes, but for one the one who made the costume for him doesn't know that and two if someone would notice the lack of them, he might jump to the right conclusion.

[up]Speaking of Daredevil, about that tweet that Netflix posted regarding DD's costume?

Apparently it's a slightly different one to what we saw in season 1...

I'm surprised so many people actually liked Kingsley's Mandarin before the twist became known. Until he was revealed to be an actor, I just found him to be an incredibly bizarre character, and not really in a good way.

I was not present for the hype, but I know when I was watching Iron Man 3, I was utterly bored by the Mandarin. The twist singlehandedly saved that character for me.
