Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

You do realize that there is a Hulk-buster at Universal, right? And a Spiderman roller coaster? I wouldn't be surprised if the use of the Marvel names in those parks is yet another tangled rights issue. Which would explain why Disney decided to open the first attraction of this kind on the other side of the world where there is no exclusivity clause which can get in their way.

To be fair, the Red Skull DID come back in the modern day in the Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon (and probably the comics, too), which made me think he'd be in Winter Soldier. But then, he didn't get zapped by a super powerful space artifact in Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon. So there's a lot of stuff in the general MCU character page that's either unconfirmed or has either been copypasted from the comic-book versions of certain characters. Anybody want to remove some of it until it's actually confirmed?

I did not know that. That just brings up more questions, however: we know that Universal was the distributor for Incredible Hulk and will be the distributor for any future Hulk movies (which is probably why none are being made), so perhaps there was some sort of deal with Marvel?
The Islands of Adventure rides even changed a little. Doc Ock in the Spider-Man ride is wearing a trenchcoat like his movie version/the comics when they were doing what the movie did.
Forever liveblogging the Avengers![]()

It is not just the Hulk. There are also a Spider-Man, a Doctor Doom and a Storm ride. Furthermore, the whole region is themed after marvel comic books heroes, and there is a parade with people characters of the comic franchise (I remember Captain America, Wolverine and Spider-Man, but there are others).
I don't what the deal is, but clearly the park rights are separated from the movie rights.

Disney acquired Marvel after Universal had already built Marvel Land, and they worked out some kind of deal that allowed Universal to still do stuff with Marvel Land despite it being a Disney property now.
Also, they didn't just give Doc Ock a trenchcoat on the Spider-Man ride, they also added a Stan Lee cameo.
I notice that happens a lot with characters we know are coming but whom haven't actually appeared - throwing in a bunch of general tropes based on their comics versions in lieu of actual cinematic universe tropes. Before Ultron came out, iirc people were doing that with Quicksilver and Witch, and I think people also do it with the heroes who are going to appear in Batman V Superman.

People like to use our trope pages to both gush and complain about upcoming works, even though our Administrivia pages explicitly state not to do that.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.
True.
Anyway, the main problem with Red Skull returning isn't really how they would justify his return (they have gone through worse things to make fit in the MCU), but more the actor. Hugo Weaving has been rather clear he wasn't interested in returning, due to the prosthetics making him rather uncomfortable.
If they bring back the Red Skull, I think they should make him more monstrous. The First Avenger Red Skull had a hammy B-movie charm to him, in something more serious like The Winter Soldier he'd look as out of place as if Groot had walked in there. And his evil plan felt safely non-horrific because A Million Is a Statistic. But in The Winter Soldier comic, he becomes something akin to Captain America's Joker, where the real fear is not "can Captain America punch him out this time" but "where's his twisted plan leading us and where's his next massacre about to be". And his design also turned more nightmarish
◊, with exposed teeth and sunken skin.
TLDR: returning Red Skull should turn from the Nicholson Joker into the Ledger Joker.

x4 I don't think it would be a problem to recast the role since the character is so makeup heavy anyways and any changes to his voice/appearance can be written off as a result of the fact we haven't seen him for 70 years.
Plus the MCU isn't above just blatantly switching actors without even attempting an in-story justification and have already done so twice.
