Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The only way I thought of to have Mandarin work would be to have him be some kind of international mastermind who controls several terrorist cells in addition to other covert exploits. But would also have major influence in several nations, maybe even the US, without anybody realizing he is actively attempting to run the world. He would have connections everywhere, including HYDRA, but would have a separate organization from there.

To the world at large, he's a renowned negotiator and ambassador. To his disciples, he's an idealistic force of good out to thwart evil. To his inner circle, he's a machiavellian megalomaniac with aims to control the world.

Basically, the idea I have is he would be Palpatine, but everyone thinks he's Yoda. Mixed with Ra's al Ghul a bit.

That said, I don't think setting him up as a villain for Tony works so well any more, or at least I don't think having him be introduced through an Iron Man film works any more. I still think introducing him as Shiang Chi's antagonist instead of Fu Manchu (while still establishing that he has a grudge against Tony Stark) and then maybe having him be an Avengers villain would work.

If they really wanted to go hard with Mandarin, they could have him or some of his agents appear in Doctor Strange a la the random HYDRA guy in Ant-Man, and establish that he really does have magic powers in this universe.

I think if anything Hulk-related will be made depends on the distribution contract with universal. Does anyone know if it has a set end? Because that will be the point at which Marvel will think about Hulk again.

[up][up][up]As of right now it doesn't look likely that there will be any solo Hulk stuff in the future.

A tv show that focuses on supporting characters from the Hulk comics would be pretty cool.

Like Doc Samson.

Or She-Hulk. Marvel is trying to diversify in genre, right? Make a lawyer series! It was a fun book, they could certainly use it!

Who knows...I didn't really expect to see General Ross again, either.

I threw this idea out a few years ago. There should be a war between Hydra Ten and Rings as home raised gangs struggle for dominance.

[up] No, he was arrested directly following the events of TIH by Black Widow. The SHIELD cell came in the same comic.

[up][up]While I can understand they wanted to avoid making a Hulk sequel considering it wasn't their most successful movie, I still feel like it's kinda disappointing to deal with his character that way. Oh, well, at least they did something with him.

Apparently, along with a bunch of Disney's other movies. Edit: Guess it's not as sure as I thought it was, but if it's in the opening reel chances are we'll get some sort of info.

You could play it as though he's not really that invested in the conflict in the Middle East and is instead using it to advance some other scheme or plot, but they already did that in Iron Man 3.

To be fair, the "terrorists" in IM 3 were ENTIRELY fake. As in actors, smoke and mirrors used to distract people from Killian's half-brained scheme. So it wouldn't be the same, even if Mandy was simply using a very much real terrorist cell to advance some grander goal and abandon them once he got what he needed.
