Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Aside from acting choice, I am interested in what story and villain will be utilized for this movie.

Clearly Kree is going to be involved in the movie as a part of the character origins, but I wonder what the rest of the story will be like and what villains the hero will have to face.

Ronan is obviously out due to him being dead. And I can't offhand think of any other Kree that can serve as the main physical foe she will face. Maybe they can introduce Nitro or Moonstone to serve as her main antagonist for her to fight in the movie, mostly as other test subjects the Kree experimented on who ended up serving the Kree in the take over of Earth or something like that.

[up] Generally, the Kree that ends up responsible for Carol Danvers' powers is Yon-Rogg.

There's Deathbird assuming Marvel has her rights.

They don't. She's Shi'ar, which means Fox gets her.

They might be able to make a case to use her provided they don't identify her as Shi'ar, similar to how they were able to use Pietro and Wanda by not making them mutants.

We don't know who owns what and given some of the more WTF rights examples they could have her.

You know what would be great? A superhero without an outright villain.

I mean, isn't it possible to write a story which breaks away from the usual "end fight"?

I've been wanting to see a Superhero Disaster film ever since Marvel started mixing genres.

[up][up] Funny enough that was my suggestion to the Marvel Studios Fantastic Four movie which just subverts all the tropes found in super hero movies (specifically Marvel) where instead of them banning together to fight the main villain (who is Annihilus after pulling a Hijack by Ganon on Dr. Doom), they opt for a third alternative by rerouting the portal to the Negative Zone to suck in back the invading forces that seeks to conquer Earth with an invention that Reed came up with.

It could be a spectacular rescue mission instead.

The big fancy endfights are a big source of the sentiment that MCU movies suffer It's the Same, So It Sucks. They could afford to either trim it short or make it a more personal match like Cap vs. the Winter Soldier or Ant-Man vs. Yellowjacket.

Every action movie has a climactic final battle.

Or just make the fights more creative.

GOTG's had spaceship combat and ended with a struggle against the Power Gem itself and trying to control its power, while Ant-Man's had all the crazy shrinking plus the army of bullet ants, for example. And Thor 2 had the dimension-hopping; uninspired though the fight was you have to give it some points for that.

It depends on the story. I mean, the end-fight in Antman was impressive and creative. But I can just as well see an antman movie which shows him stealing something and the success is the big climax.

Thor 2's climax also accomplished something we're not likely to see very often: it separated Thor from Mjolnir.

In a better movie, this would have been awesome. As it was, it was still hilarious.

Apparently that was not Mark Ruffalo at the Civil War set.

I'm surprised nobody has suggested Charlize Theron for Captain Marvel? Especially off the back of Mad Max: Fury Road, where imo she proved a capable action star whilst retaining the ability to give a deeper performance - which would come in handy for the MCU.

[up]She has been suggested already. I like KW, though, because while she is a kick-ass fighter, she also pulls off femininity and has a sense for comedic timing.

Just got back from seeing Ant-Man. I just have to talk about Darren Cross now. Apparently the director got his Marvel villains mixed up when "adapting" him from the comics.
