Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Huh. That actually looks kind of cool - I mean, it actually looks homemade, unlike all the previous movie costumes (well, aside from the first Raimi costume, which was just a sweatshirt with a spider on it). But yeah, I totally buy that as real.

Of course, he's going to leave fingerprints everywhere, so maybe not.

Aww I wanted something more like the Scarlet Spider.

Ok, at first I hesitated, thinking it was clickbait, but then I caved, annnnnnd:

...It looks legit.

Speaking of Spidey's costume...

Horizon Labs, where Peter was employed as Peter Parker instead of as Spider-Man, would also work. For a time, he was actually able to be a Super-Scientist as his day job, building the technology of the future at Horizon.

True. But I thought it would be a cool way to introduce the Fantastic Four into the MCU without having them as super heroes.

I was unaware that "Future Foundation" was an actual thing that scientists did sciency stuff for science. I thought it was just the name of the team with idiotic costumes because Marvel couldn't create a new fire-based Hero to fill Johnny's spot while he was "dead"

They are more or less the official Fantastic Four organization. They basically do what the F4 already did regularly (both science stuff for science and super heroing) but without being limited to the four members and with a focus on the science (They also double as a "school" for super smart kids). The implementation is not perfect, but the concept is really cool. It makes the Fantastic Four officially more than just a super hero team. They are also a recognized team of scientists.

@Possible Spider-Man costume,

I like it. Seems something a teen would wear when still figuring it out their super hero costume.

Had no idea about that, I'd probably read it if such a comic was in existence. Maybe team up with Atomic Robo for super sciency stuff.

[up] It did exist, it was called FF and it was glorious. It featured Alex Power, Artie, Leech, Bentley-23, Ahura, Franklin and Valeria Richards, Onome (from Wakanda), Adolf (son of the Impossible Man), Vil and Wu (from the Uhari), and Mik, Korr, Turg, and Tong (moloids). And Professor Dragon Man.

Plus, there was a Doombot-H.E.R.B.I.E.

[up][up]It had a book for a while (parallel to the main Fantastic Four), but it got canceled. I didn't follow it too closely, but the focus was a bit scattered. Sometimes it focused on the super science stuff, sometimes it focused on the kids and sometimes it went full super hero mode. I feel it could be done better but the concept was really cool. The upside is that even though the book is no more, the group still exist in the universe.

Eh, everything's going to be put back once Secret Wars is over, so they'll exist again.

[up][up]You and me both know this won't stick past the event. This is not the current status quo of the MU, it is just a transitory period. True, we technically don't know how things will be when everything goes back, but until given evidence of contrary, I will assume it will continue as it is now. Maybe the FF will be disbanded or simply don't exist. But the last thing we heard is that they exist, so that is how things are.

Well, post-SW, the Fantastic Four are definitely disbanded since the Human Torch is in Uncanny Inhumans and the Thing is a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, but we don't know what will happen to the Future Foundation.

Although I do have to admit that the Foundation does exist on Battleworld, kind of. It's Doom's Foundation instead and it trains kids the only way Doom knows how: by pitting them against one another and having them unwittingly kill the losers.

[up][up][up] I kind of like treating it as the status quo, though.

"Hey, X is still alive in the comics, right?"

"Probably not."

Kraven seems like kind of an obvious choice, doesn't he? What other classic Spider-Man villain hasn't been used in a movie yet?

Ones that movies have never used? The Vulture, the Scorpion, Mysterio, Chameleon, the Shocker, Morbius, the Jackal, and the Black Cat.

They could have just relied on it being Spider-Man to draw in an audience and have Green Goblin.

[up][up]There's also Carnage and Rhino. Technically the latter was in ASM 2 but that was a really small role.

edit: I forgot Hobgoblin.

I'd really like to see Black Cat.

Kraven sounds like he'd be fun, but I feel like he's the kind of villain that needs Spider-Man to be well-known to encounter, making him a bit of an odd choice for what will essentially be this Spidey's first outing, even if it isn't his actual first appearance.

Vulture's one of the first Spider-Man villains - to my knowledge, only Chameleon is older than him. That said, he's not exactly the most impressive villain, at least normally.

Problem is most of the higher-stakes villains have been used already. Folks like Vulture and Shocker rarely do much besides rob banks or whatever.

Vulture could actually work pretty well if they had him use a stolen and modified version of Falcon's suit.

Didn't Vulture invent his own suit and turn to crime because somebody stole it?

Maybe he could be the original designer of it, and somebody else stole it and sold it to the US Military?

Just cut out the middleman and have him be a former army researcher that decides to use it for evil.
