Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Spider-Man was only a member until Johnny came back to life; he was a pinch-hitter. I think, if the films wanted to depict Peter's scientific career, Horizon Labs would be both a better fit and an easier one to do because it doesn't rely on anyone's rights but his own.
That being said, I do agree with wanting the properties back more than the FF as a team. Even the individual characters are more engaging than the actual team.
I also agree with this, and am of the opinion that the Future Foundation should never have been a superhero team, especially since it runs afoul of the same problem the X-Men have: it's a superhero story about taking children from their homes and weaponizing them. In theory, it's a think tank for gifted students, and in practice, it's a poorly-regulated ball of child endangerment.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I do like the idea of the Fantastic Four having a school for gifted youngsters. And I liked what I saw of them in FF.
Clearly every superhero team should also have a school.
That's X-Men, Avengers, Fantastic Four and whatever the hell Captain Britain is associated with by this point.
Do I hear an Inhuman U? Or how about Defenders Boot Camp?
Forever liveblogging the AvengersIt's true, watching the classic heroes pass on their skills and wisdom to the new generation is always engaging. Spider-Man mentoring Hope Summers was similarly awesome and I was sad when that particular plot point failed to outlive AvX.
Spidey was in top form and Hope, once she got past her initial eye-roll at the idea, bought everything he was selling. She initially scoffs and sarcastically asks if she's supposed to get a costume like his, and then he gives her an amazing speech about responsibility that far transcends the typical "Power/Responsibility" talk, leading to her running after him asking if he has more wisdom to share and whether she should get a costume like his.
I really wanted her to become a Spider-Man character after all was said and done, but nope. She packed her bags, went back to the X-franchise, and proceeded to star in one kinda decent comic about Cable before dropping into Character Limbo and doing f*ck all since. With the Mutant Decimation resolved, Hope's purpose in the comics is fulfilled, which I had hoped meant she could go on to do other things, but that was not to be the case.

Oh God! Natural light!![]()
. . . . . Wow. Out of all the things the Av X crossover gave, the one thing that is not only good story telling but also an interesting character arc is treated as nothing important.
I mean seriously, Spider-Man mentoring Hope in using her powers. If we learn anything from that Spider-Man and the X-Men mini series is that Spidey will make a great teacher at the school. Scratch that, Spider-Man in general will make a great mentor to any new generation heroes based on his interaction with his X-Students, the recent Nova and Miles Morales. Runaways could of had one with Spider-Man, but they threw it out over their idiotic morality.
The reason Peter is such a great mentor for young heroes is that he remembers what it was like to be them. Young and stupid and nervous and not really knowing what to do.
My various fanfics.
Exactly! Its all about his own personal experience growing up as a teenage super hero who faced many difficult situations in his life.
Whether it is being villified by the public as a masked menace, facing the harsh economy that forces him to make tough decisions as to what he will do for money or losing the lives of the people he love. The guy clearly knows how to stay being an idealistic hero in a cynical world.
That was actually a plot point in the Marvel vs. DC fanwork on You Tube. What started as a play on the "I'm a Mac!" "I'm a PC!" concept with superheroes comparing their movies grew into some actual stories based around it. One of the stories was about the Joker brainwashing superheroes into thinking that all their loved ones were murdered in order to reboot all the superhero franchises into being dark and gritty like the Dark Knight trilogy.
The process repeatedly failed on Spider-Man much to the Joker's frustration, resulting in Peter pointing this exact thing out.
- SPIDER-MAN: My parents are dead. My uncle was shot. Even my girlfriend's been murdered.
- GREEN GOBLIN: I can vouch for that.
- SPIDER-MAN: I have lost everything I ever cared about and I'm still here with all the morals I started with. Now you're looking for some magic button to push to change me. Well you give it all you got, because I'm either just too strong or too stupid to lose hope!

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Oh, right. I agree with that. But the Future Foundation was both a superhero group and a science foundation. Anyway, I meant the the foundation, not the team. I thought it would be need if Peter Parker visited there or whatever. Often a Spider-Man movie needs some sort of lab building where science happens to create the plot. That building could be the Baxter Building, head of the Future Foundation.
I can agree with that. I do love my teenage drama.
I am still boomed AA was canceled and that no decent X-teen book ever happened again.
Horizon Labs, where Peter was employed as Peter Parker instead of as Spider-Man, would also work. For a time, he was actually able to be a Super-Scientist as his day job, building the technology of the future at Horizon.
And now he has Parker Industries.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I mean, Spidey's an established friend of the FF. I think it's smart that they brought him in because having the team seek out a Replacement Goldfish for one of their closest friends would just be crass.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Earth, Fire, Invisible, and Stretchy?
I can see interpreting Invisible as air but Reed as water is kind of a stretch
Forever liveblogging the AvengersDon't get me wrong, he was a great pinch-hitter. He made sense. Certainly he made more sense than the "replacement Fantastic Four" they more recruited that was supposed to only exist for fifteen seconds, featuring She-Hulk, Medusa, Scott Lang Ant-Man, and Johnny's girlfriend wearing a Thing costume.
But a pinch-hitter, he was.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.But who is the best completely ridiculous replacement Fantastic Four?
Medusa, Ant-Man, She-Hulk, and Johnny's girlfriend in a Thing costume
or
Spider-Man, Wolverine, Ghost Rider and the Hulk?
Forever liveblogging the AvengersAlso, Scott flies around when shrunken on this ridiculously stupid thing
◊. It's a bunch of squiggly lines that hover. I honestly don't know if he had that before his stint on FF or not.

Hmm, have to go with the latter. The former had some direct ties to the original team in some way; half the latter's roster seem to have little to do with the Fantastic Four (seriously Wolverine and Ghost Rider? Dr. Strange and Namor made more sense).
As for the stretching representing water, well seeing how water is ever changing and ever expanding I think that is how Mr. Fantastic powers represent that element.

Well, he's not the first to think of it; Scott McCloud, in his Making Comics book, has a section about inspirations for characters that links the Four to the natural elements.
I like the idea more that the four fundamental cosmic forces are fire, rock, invisible, and stretchy.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersAlleged first look at Spider-Man from the D23 Civil War trailer
.
Not buying it but make of it what you will.

At least for me, it sounds stupid as a Superhero group name. Sounds just fine when applied to a group of scientists doing sciency stuff for science. Also, I dislike their black-on-white costumes and Spider-Man killed the theme. Would it have hurt to at least try to find a fire-based superhero?
