Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

For the same reason "Japanese" is the name of the language and the people. Or even "Chinese". Hell, we can get get past Europe without similar cases, such as the "Dutch", the Finnish and the Hungarian. Some old people started using the word and it cached on.
so its confirmed Spiderman will at least have a blue and red color scheme for one scene. http://comicbook.com/2015/08/08/what-will-spider-mans-captain-america-civil-war-costume-really-l/
well its not a surprise lol
I agree. Too many films about Americans being assholes. Why can't we pick another set of people to be villains? Like, I dunno, Middle Eastern Islamics, or Russians, or the Chinese? No one ever calls them assholes.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.![]()
And she, apparently, is going to Agent Carter, so barring any time-travel shenanigans...

I suspect Marvel doesn't want too many folks with the same codename running around, to avoid the MCU getting as convoluted as the MU proper often is.
Yeah in the end they could have done the whole thing about fear without resorting to another American weapons dealer who wants to sell to both sides. A motive other than "rich guy who wants to make even more money by selling weapons" would be a nice change.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranHonestly, Iron Man 3 makes the first two feel kinda like rough drafts of a viewpoint. It comes the closest to how this sort of shit really happens: the government is scared of Party A, so they secretly bankroll Party B, and then present a public image of shock and awe when Party B suddenly starts threatening the US more tangably than Party A ever did.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.I hope they don't change the suit too much from ASM 2. That was perfect.

Killian didn't want to sell to both sides. He wanted to sell to America, but he couldn't get the mix of Extremis right. All of the people he used kept on exploding, so he blamed terrorists using "the Mandarin." Finally, he engineered a plan to kidnap Pepper Potts in order to force Tony to fix Extremis and, at the same time, make the people and the government more afraid of terrorists, thus ensuring Extremis would be a hit.
That was a tie-in to Avengers, not Iron Man 3 (you know, because War Machine/Iron Patriot was in Iron Man 3). Also, the Ten Rings were an actual terrorist organization that Killian just used the imagery of (see: "All Hail the King" one-shot - hey, if you're using comic book tie-ins, I can use one-shots).

to be fair i don't remember his exact line. i believe he says people want someone to blame for broad societal problems, so he gave it to them, or something along those lines. i personally thought the message was pretty clear myself.
edit:
ok i found the quote i was thinking of.
i think maybe "spelling it out" may not be the exact words to use, but specifically because he mentioned all those other terrorist leaders, the message seems clear to me: he created the mandarin as an easy scapegoat that society will accept as a villain because he's "foreign/exotic", so he can continue to operate as he does without detection, and serve as a commentary on how people place the blame on complex societal issues on foreigners when in reality things aren't that simple.
