Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The current buzz is that the Spider-Man reboot villain might be Kraven.

[up]Considering that this is the popular choice with the fans, I take that with a grain of salt.

You don't expect them to confer to popular choice?

[up]Seeing as how most people probably wanted MJ instead of Gwen in the first Amazing Spiderman before they saw it, then not always, no.

#39856: Aug 4th 2015 at 12:09:05 PM

[up][up]Sometimes they do. But very often the fans see what they want to see. Like thinking that Emma Watson will play MJ just because she happened to have red hair when she was cast, or just recently the actress who was rumoured to be a female Robin but apparently play Barbara Gordon instead. In this case someone involved in the project just has to mention that he thinks that Kraven is an interesting villain and the fans will take that as confirmation. Until I see an official casting call or an official announcement, I don't buy into it.

I'd like Kraven and Chameleon as a team.

I still kinda want to see Elle Fanning as Gwen Stacy. tongue

Does that say anything about me?

Kraven's pretty cool, actually. Since it's in the MCU, it'd be interesting to have a low level Hero Killer as a villain.

But she might actually be the right age for it?

Oh god that page is... way creepy.

Why does every page for female actors insist on being covered in sleaze? Especially when they're underage?

This might say something about me but... that Elle Fanning page, other than the Mega nekko entry, what part of it was sleazy?

That's it. One entry can completely tank an entire page for me.

Though, "Huge Schoolgirl" is borderline...

so just edit it dude. doubt anybody would really object much.

anyway she was alright in maleficent i guess, the movie itself was just alright at best. i haven't seen her in anything else so idk whether she'd be good for gwen or not.

Playing Aurora in Maleficent is a hard role to judge her on, because all the role required is to smile pretty. The titular Sleeping Beauty is more of an object than a character.

[up][up][up][up][up] Some of the male actor pages can still get a little fawning, despite the mass editing to get rid of that kind of stuff. Though it's less of the "dude s/he's so hawt and fits these kinds of fetishes" and more "s/he's soooo charming and cute and look at those gorgeous eyes!" so maybe it's not so alarming.

I'm scared to look at what the rabid fanpeople (mainly fangirls) have done to the pages of Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Honestly, I think creator pages should just go tropeless entirely. Just list the works they've been in.

There's nothing terrible on the Hiddleston page, just some G-rated fawning about what a nice person he is.

Hiddleston's is a little gushy but nothing too bad. At least it does make mention of the Fan Dumb.

That reminded me of this amusing quote from Keira Knightley regarding that fandom:

"It's terrifying," she admitted. "I mean, they're lovely. I feel terrified saying they're terrifying cause they might come after me. So… yes, it's amazing! They're very artistic! They paint pictures of him. You go to premieres and there's these amazing paintings of Ben looking Ben-like… [They're] a very hysterical, artistic type."
