Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Gifted is just synonymous for superhuman since the Whedons aren't using the proper term Mutate (are they aware of Marvel's lingo?).

as for Spiderman, this one will be very different because it takes place during his teenage years only. imagine Fitz from Agents of SHIELD 11 years younger but obviously different personality hobbies wants need relationships and history. we never truly had a 14-17 year old with superpowers on the sliver screen who reflects what you see in the highschool setting/mindset of a teenier. do not forget this would be the first time EVER spiderman interacts with not only a greater universe but the rest of Marvel... and spiderman has lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of alias/rouges who can crossover into other territory. o do not forget theres no origin story

if it succeeds then films like Shazam will take notes

Do you mean "in the MCU" or "at all"? Because we had Chronicle, which was about three teenagers with superpowers, and was very good (and got a lot more into the idea of what teenagers who suddenly got superpowers would really be like than any of the comic book movies have).

What's wrong with "Gifteds"? Hasn't that term been used in the comics?

there are contractual reasons why we're getting another spidery movie so soon

i never saw chronicles but i do know its not a superhero story, its found footage, and it doesnt really explore what being a teenger means to a specific type of archtype (geek) like a John Hughes film or the Gold Bergs show. think Harry Potter style if you know what i mean. that is what Marvel is doing differently. really establishing a young peter parker in this superhero world much like ellie (last of us) was in a zombie apocalypse.

"John Francis Daley: (It’s a) John Hughes take [with] Peter in high school. I think we’re going to spend a lot more time on them in high school and deal with him being a real kid. Jonathan M. Goldstein: They cast a real kid, so we’re going to write a real kid."

problem with JH is he never knew how to write urban minorities over blown scenes with excessive melodrama and always made adults useless

giving a few more years before the next spider-man movie is not the same as just outright giving up on him. it's just that it hasn't been that long since TAS, and now they're basically rebooting him AGAIN. that's one case where i think calling "superhero movie fatigue" is at least somewhat justified.

and yeah i know there's contractual stuff behind the marvel spidey movie, but it really makes no difference to the consumer.

For me, my main problem with another Spider-Man movie is that we're getting Peter Parker instead of Miles Morales. Sure, Peter Parker's an okay character, but we've already had five movies of him, the last of which wasn't that long ago, so I was hoping to have a different Spidey for once.

Gifted is just synonymous for superhuman since the Whedons aren't using the proper term Mutate (are they aware of Marvel's lingo?).

"Mutate" both sounds similar to "mutant" and incredibly dumb. "These people have been mutated! They are...mutates!".

"Gifted" (used AOS) and "enhanced" (used on AOU/AOS), on the other hand, are both actual adjectives used to describe people and also sound waaaay better.

I personally don't care if the new Spidey movies are based on John Hughes or even John Carpenter movies in terms of influence.

Actually, I'm lying. A John Carpenter style Spidey movie would be awesome.

re: Chronicle

It is most definitely a riff on the archetypical superhero story.

Told through the found footage style.

It's really good. If you haven't seen it you should seek it out:

I don't know that found footage is mutually exclusive with superhero. The MCU shows that superheroes fit into a lot of genres.

Sorry for the double post but also,

You can't start with Miles Morales. A huge part of his character is about being inspired by Peter Parker. You must necessarily have a Peter Parker Spider Man before you have a Miles Morales Spider Man.

Nothing says you can't make Peter a minority though. I always liked the idea of a Hispanic Peter. New York does have a huge population of people from Latin America.

[up] I'm not even talking about the racial aspect. I was addressing the poster who said he was tired of Peter as a character.

I for one also think Hispanic!Peter would be fun. Though as a last name Parker doesn't sound anywhere near Hispanic.

i guess that wouldn't be too bad, since there's nothing really in Peter's character that ties him to being white specifically.

i think the post in question was moreso about miles being a different person than peter rather than his ethnicity, though i wouldn't know.

Point although nothing says he has to be fully Hispanic.

I do agree that they need to establish Peter as a character though. Not doing so would be like doing a movie about Kamala Khan before Carol Danvers. A large part of their characterization revolves around the original character.

Hispanic and Latino people can be named Peter. No need to call a possible Hispanic Peter "Pedro".

Carol was the inspiration for Kamala in-universe but I wouldn't say her characterization revolves around her.

She takes just as much if not more inspiration from her religion.

Just got back from seeing Ant-Man. It was really good, I thought it was stupid at first but after I heard about it getting talked about positively on a podcast I gave it a chance and went to see it. It was hilarious, probably even more so than Guardians of the Galaxy. My only problem is I MISSED THE SECOND CREDITS STINGER, ARGH

Cue Star Wars exposition dump at the start of the movie:

"One day Miguel O'hara was walking home from school and then was randomly through 84-ish years into the past. Now he's Spider-Man because reasons."

Problem solved.
