Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up]I would love to see him turn up in the MCU somewhere. I always loved his character. I have been kinda hoping for him to become a recurring character in Agents of SHIELD, but a movie would be fine too.

I don't think Taskmaster can really carry a movie by himself since he's just a mercenary rather than any ambitious villain, and he'd utterly job to Scott's shrinking powers anyway. He's more of a match for folks like Captain America and Black Widow.

He'd be good as a supporting antagonist in The Defenders, those guys are more his level. Imagine Iron Fist and Taskmaster cross-checking each other in the face.

[down]I don't think so. At worst he'd be in that gray area like Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. He's an all-purpose villain who started in The Avengers. His association with Deadpool is more recent.

Fox owns Taskmaster.

Yeah. Taskmaster is not that related to Deadpool. He started as a Avenger villain and have been appearing here and there since then.

[up][up] Actually, Taskmaster's powers might work well in a fight against Ant-Man — there was an issue of the recent Ant-Man run where he fights Taskmaster and TM wins through ingenuity. He can basically imitate any fighting style, including Captain America and Spider-Man, which gives him the advantage over Scott, whose fighting style is "run at them and shrink."

[up][up] Yeah, which just makes it baffling. Too bad. I would have liked to see him in the MCU.

Can you provide citation on Fox owning Task Master?

Anyway, rewatching the first episode of Daredevil, I only just realized that the dude who Jack Murdock was supposed to job against but instead KO'd was Carl Creel, AKA the Absorbing Man.

Jack KO'd a nigh-invulnerable superhuman and nobody knew it. tongue

Technically, in AOS, they said he would turn his fists into steel during fights...but since Jack hit him in the face, that trick probably didn't do much.

Still, he at least tanked Creel's punches.

Matt mentions that his father's tactic was to let them punch him until they pretty much broke their arms, then launch a counteroffensive.

I can imagine Creel going through harder and harder materials as the fight went on, thinking the whole time "why the hell won't this guy stay down?"

Is it possible that the match happened before Carl got his powers.

It's never said when he got them right? So there's no guarantee that he had his powers at that time.

Fox had vague plans for a Taskmaster film at one point. On a semi-related note where do the rights of Vertigo comics stand with respect to Warner Bros and DC? They seem pretty unconnected.

The WB has all the rights to DC/Vertigo comics. With Vertigo, however, I believe they will produce them in a separate studio, New Line, because they are supposed to be separate (or more adult) than the DCEU.

Someone gave me a book for my birthday, in which all characters which are considered Avengers (plus some of their enemies) are listed. The Taskmaster was in it, because he is often working for SHIELD in the comics. But he is also often featured in Deadpool comics. I suspect that he is one of those in-between characters.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Ward becomes the Taskmaster eventually.

And wasn't the guy who fought against Matt's father Crusher Creel's father and not Crusher Creel himself?

Blunt's been screwed out of a role in the MCU twice before, she showed her chops in All You Need Is Kill (seriously can't remember the English title, it's that forgettable), and the only reason people bring up Natalie Dormer is because of that one nonrepresentative picture of Carol that kinda looks like her.

At the same time, it's El Mayimbe.

El Mayimbe is actually the one saying he doesn't think Blunt will get the part.

Blunt was almost Black Widow. Maybe this will be her big MCU role.

Nope, they mention Creel himself.

Edge of Tomorrow, I think

Which is an okay title on its own I think for a time looping thing.

Say, who has the rights to The Runaways? I'd think it would be Marvel, but since one of the characters is a mutant, I'm not sure.

I'm surprised there are still links to the casting calls for the cancelled movie on the character page.
