Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

In my headcanon Leviathan was the group which fired the rocket.

Oh yeah, I forgot. Extremis was designed for U.S. military veterans who had lost limbs in combat.
Still, how the hell did that program get approved in the first place?
AIM: "So, good news is, you're going to get your missing limbs back, but the bad news is that there's probably going to some sort of side effect involving crazy fire powers."
U.S. government: That's totally fine. Approved.

idk. the govemrent has been only useful when it came to creating SHIELD lol. however i believe in IM 3 Killian did say that the govemrent stopped because his research became too unethical. so if they thought it was bad then does that mean corrupt politicians are out the gate? idk who would pick up where IM 3 left off?

Um, I think you guys are kinda forgetting a certain part.
"You do realize you just signed an agreement that allows us to waive any responsibility in the very likely event that you explode into microscopic bits, right? We bolded it and everything."
"Yeah, yeah, now shut up and give me the juice, dammit!"
They were able to get funding for the project because, holy shit, they could regrow limbs. Do you realize how amazing that is for military veterans? Who wouldn't want to be part of that project?!
Meanwhile, the superheating was a side effect but largely benign. These sorts of things are expected with experimental new treatments.
And nobody ever exploded on-record. Seriously, that's the entire reason for Killian's fake terrorist attacks: to disguise the involvement of Extremis in the explosions. Until Stark outed everything, the official story was that there was never an Extremis Explosion, that is not a thing that happens with Extremis.

I mean, it wouldn't be the first time a corporation has lied about things.
I'm still waiting on AIM to return with the leader being MODOK.

Wait, you consider "exploding" to be benign? Because, remember, they couldn't get past the whole "most participants explode" thing. The ones that didn't explode got cool powers, but most, you know, exploded all over the place. (Not saying that they told anybody about that side effect, but if they put it into market, I'm pretty sure it would come out.)

No, the superheating was benign because they were hiding the part about explosions. So basically they were telling the government "They regrow limbs and get awesome fire powers! We're working on getting rid of the fire powers because you don't want to give those to every person who needs a limb regrown, but other than that it's perfect!"
That's the plot of the movie. They're working on fixing the exploding thing so they can market it. They had a few corrupt officials like the VP in their pocket based on the promise that they'd fix it.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.Yes, which is why they were secretly working on solving that part while publicly disguising the symptoms as terrorist attacks. They weren't going to their backers and going, "So, our subjects explode, give us money!"

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.In a way it's like what happened to Roy Harper in Cry For Justice; the character who barely appears in the story and whose presence has no overall impact is the one who suffers the most. Felicia really did not need to be in Superior. Hell, I'd argue that not letting her move on from the Spider-world is why her character is so terrible now.
While the 2007 Heroes for Hire book wasn't gold, I'd like to see Felicia with such a team but done right.
Thanks for the correction.

The side effects were benign so far as they were communicating to the outside world.

Eh, I do find it funny^^
On a more serious note, who would you guys like to see as the villain in Antman 2? Because honestly, despite what people used to think, the real crappy thing about Antman wasn't his powers, but his rogues gallery (except for Ultron, and they already gave this one to Tony and the Avengers). The fact they had to create a new super-villain by mixing a Scott's Starter Villain with one of Pym's alter-ego says legion about this. So I have really no idea who they could use next time...
Awhile ago I did a bit of thinking about which of the MCU antagonists before Winter Soldier might have been members of HYDRA, but I doubt any of them were.
The one who comes the closest to being probable is Stane, and even so he was too much of a "sell to everyone, make a profit" sort to be a one-organization man. I wouldn't be surprised if he was working with them, though.

In all seriousness, I do wonder if Thanos is going to end up hijacking what's left of HYDRA.
When Red Skull "died" in The First Avenger he seemed to have been sucked into a portal created by the Tesseract. In Avengers Loki, now working for Thanos via the Chitauri, emerged from a portal created by the Tesseract. So it stands to reason that the Tesseract may of delivered the Red Skull right to Thanos.
Flashforward to today, Red Skull could now be working for Thanos. He shows up on Earth on the eve of the Infinity War with a bunch of alien tech and unites the remnants of HYDRA and has them help clear the way for Thanos's arrival. I could easily see the first half of Infinity War Part 1 involve fighting the Avengers fighting Red Skull on Earth before Thanos shows up halfway through.
Also I know Hugo Weaving doesn't want to reprise the role of Red Skull. But the Red Skull is such a makeup heavy character (which is apparently a big part of why he doesn't want to reprise his role) and it's been seventy plus years since we've seen him so the role could easily be recast.
