Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I would do one movie without love interest, then perhaps introduce Black Cat (because we have never seen her and she has spin-off potential) and then finally MJ. I honestly, don't want to see Gwen dying again, and there is no point in introducing her if you don't do this storyline. Plus, I don't want to see anyone or anything hanging at a bridge anytime soon.
Felicia Hardy for love interest! Do it, Marvel! If it works in the movies, they might bring her back in a big way in the comics!
Right now she's being horribly misused in the comics. They're trying to make her a big-time supervillain. She's on a bid to become the new kingpin of crime in New York, because she's mad that Superior punched her in the face once. It's dumb.

Spectacular Spider-man had Gwen, and it didn't bother doing that storyline. (Mind you, it got cancelled before it had a chance to, but whatever; two years and 26 episodes was still a lot of time for an adapation to go without doing something similar to that story.) So you don't always need to plan to kill off Gwen to have Gwen.

Goddammit, why did you have to remind me about that? It's so goddamn stupid. I'd easily say of all the people hit with the Idiot Ball during Superior Spider Man she was hit the worst.
You know what, I'm with ya. Bring in Black Cat for love interest. Make it as blatantly obvious a Batman/Catwoman thing as you want. Just do something so that her comics counterpart can be salvaged.

I think it would help her a lot.
After being an occasional cameo for much of her character history since her short-lived romance with Thor ended, Jane Foster is back as Thor. You can't tell me that's unrelated to her prominence in the MCU.
Same for Pepper. Her visibility exploded after the Iron Man film made more money than god, and we got Ezekiel Stane from that too.

Iron Man having an AI named J.A.R.V.I.S. Black Widow referring to the "red in her ledger" in Superior Spider Man. The Guardians having a whole bit on Earth. Scott Lang's increasing prominence. The redesigns of Hawkeye
◊ and Star Lord.
Nick Fury Jr.

Marvel hasn't hid at all the fact that they're taking a lot from the MCU. And why would they? It's opened up the comics universe to the mainstream in a way that's never been done before. They make the comics look more like the movies, and they start cashing in with those that'd otherwise never touch a comic book before. At least, that's what the idea is.

Of course, there's also the fact that they decidedly do storylines that take them further away from the MCU, like Sam Wilson as the new Captain America and Jane Foster as Thor.
Marvel, on the whole, likes to superficially look similar to the movies, but still keep their own stories and plots separate.

Thanks; that just proves my point. You don't need to kill off Gwen to have her in there. She's a decent supporting character, and if you want someone for a Peter/MJ/Someone-Else love triangle, you could always throw Gwen in there. She can be more than something to motivate the hero.

You know what the world needs?
Your momma's so dumb she thinks oral sex means talking dirty.
I'm pretty sure the comics have had a Love Triangle more than once, and The Spectacular Spider Man definitely had one. Having one in the films would be keeping true to the source material, if nothing else.

Well, if you don't do a Love Triangle, then you can't have Gwen and MJ.
Pete would have married the former if she lived, and did end up marrying the latter until it was retconned. They are both too important to his life, and unless you never have Peter end up with anyone at all (or really go for putting him permanently with Felicia), you'd have to decide which one he goes with.
Maybe that is for the best. As you guys said, The Black Cat needs some positive press right now with the crap the comics are pulling on her.

One Strip! One Strip! You can totally have Gwen and MJ. Do what Ultimate Spider-Man did — have Pete in love with MJ, have them become best friends with Gwen, and that's it. (The only real love triangle in USM was between Pete, MJ, and Kitty Pryde, and they can't use Kitty since she's owned by Fox.)
And then, once Pete and MJ finally do get together...kill him off.
And then bring in Miles.
I feel the need to point out that Peter, Gwen, and MJ weren't a love triangle. They were a square. Harry was also involved.
Until MJ dumped Harry due to his self-destructive lifestyle and Gwen died, Peter/Gwen and Harry/MJ were the big couples, with cross-couple flirting also being a thing but not very major.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.If Black Cat is a love interest, I'd like it to be either totally one-sided on Peter's end, or something like the Ultimate-verse where she digs him for a while only to find out he's a teenager and drop it there. Romantic Plot Tumor averted.

That might not be a bad idea. I mean, they've done MJ, and they've done Gwen. Those are the two big ones right there. Betty may have come first, but no one is quite as iconic as Gwen or MJ. They are literally fighting it out for #1.
Skipping out on the romance might be the wisest choice they could make. Focus on other stuff to set them apart from the Raimi trilogy and the Amazing series.
