Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

re: tobey maguire
i didn't realize this until years afterwards but yeah he's pretty mopey. the dweeby look is fine and all but he didn't have much of a sense of humor.
i don't really like andrew garfield either, but i'm kind of unable to separate his performance from how much I did not enjoy how peter's character was written overall.
i honestly disliked the first amazing spider-man enough that i never saw the second.

The Amazing Spider-man is my favourite Spider-man movie (yeah, I like it more than Spider-man 2, which gets second place). It has some flaws, but there is so much good in it that it is the only Spider-man movie which I consider worthy of my DVD collection (though I might buy the second part too, just to have the complete story).
Regarding the Sinister Six. My vision for that would be for them to be the villains of the third Spider-Man movie. However by then in addition to Peter Parker there would also be Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, and Jessica Drew all with the same power set.
They would be seeded in one or two at a time either at the beginning or end of a Spider-Man movie, but would occasionally show up in completely different movies and TV shows independently of Peter Parker and initially won't be part of an official team. So for example Gwen Stacy might get her powers at the end of the first Spider-Man movie, then do a team-up with the Wasp in an Ant-Man sequel where she has more screentime there then she does in the second Spider-Man movie.
At the same time the villains that will make up the Sinister Six are also seeded into the first two Spider-Man movies. Then in the 3rd movie they all team up together against Peter Parker who ends up calling in the other 3 spider-powered characters in order to stand any chance against the Sinister Six at all.
So am I the only one who sincerely thinks Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been the best Spider-Man movie so far? And that it was actually really good and enjoyable despite its flaws? Yes? Okay, I'll just, uh, I'll just go sit in the corner now...
I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.
Rhino was one of the best parts of the movie. If anything, Electro is the stupid villain who needs to be cut out.
It wasn't nonsense. Spider-Man fights supervillains. That's what he does. It was showing that he's not letting himself get overwhelmed with angst to the point that he lets supervillains murder random civilians through his own inaction.
I consider Amazing 1 to be the best Spider-Man movie.
I consider Amazing 2 to be tied for worst. When it's good, it's way better than Spider-Man 3. When it's bad, it's way worse.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Spider-Man 3 had some upsides.
Like, I really liked Topher Grace's Eddie Brock. He wasn't very big, but he was a smarmy, self-important douchebag who blames everyone else for his own failings and goes to petty lengths to avenge himself for quasi-imagined sleights.
Compared with Spectacular's Eddie Brock, heavily inspired by the Ultimate comics...I mean, Spectacular's Eddie was a great character that made you feel really sympathetic toward him, but Grace's Eddie was more faithful to the original character of Eddie Brock. The guy's a tool.

Hey, USM Brock is a pretty big fucking tool. What with the hitting on high school girls and rehearsing deep-sounding bullshit to impress them.
That's not really uncommon college male behavior. >.>
Especially rehearing deep-sounding bullshit. Everyone peacocks in different ways, but a lot of guys have something that they want women to notice.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I didn't know common behavior was exempt from being toolish. I retract my comment.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies. There are things I like about all the Spiderman movies. Some are petty reasons, some are probably valid.
- The first movie had all the things that made Spider Man who he is to me (back when I watched it) including Aunt May in the hospital.
- The second movie was imperfect, and the idea of Ock being sympathetic is odd, but as cheesy as it was, I loved that part where everyone on the train tried to defend Peter. It's unrealistic to think all of them kept the secret (and I read a fanfic that actually dealt with that issue in an interesting manner), but it's nice to see his efforts rewarded. Plus him stopping the train is an impressive feat of strength. It's no Final Chapter
or even that time he held up the Daily Bugle, but it's a reminder of what Pete can do when he pushes himself.
- ..........Right, 3 was awful, but Peter and Harry going Back-to-Back Badasses was nice. As for Topher Grace, he was an odd choice for Brock, but they seemed to be going for an Anti-Peter Parker (and I remember thinking Grace would be a good Parker) so I'm going to cut him some slack.
.....fuck that dance scene.
- Amazing brought the snark and it brought it wonderfully. I missed that about the Maguire movies. I do wish they'd had Ben say the line.
- Amazing 2...... Still had some good snark, Electro, whatever flaws in his origin or personality is shown to be a terrifying threat that you have to wonder how he keeps losing, flaws or not, Pete's costume evolves to look more like his comic suit, which I like.....but I really wish they had not killed Gwen. I know Marvel is pushing her now, and trying to throw MJ under the bus (after being Pete's wife for years at that) but I loved Gwen in this, and I really wanted to see more out of her in this world. Then again, Gwen never should have died in the comics either. Some say she got boring, but that's because of how she's being written.
Though I do feel like the two loves of Pete's life have become somewhat mutually exclusive: if Gwen lives, MJ can't evolve, and if MJ evolves, Gwen is dead.
One Strip! One Strip! Now that you mention it, Grace would have made a pretty good Spider-Man.
I liked the Amazing movies. They were fun. Perfect? No. But still enjoyable. I liked Garfield as Peter, not so much as Spider-Man.
Anyway, I just saw Ant-Man. I liked it. It was funny. There were a lot of cameos from Cap movies.
...I guess there really isn't too much more to say about it.
And if I claim to be a wise man, well, it surely means that I don't know.@Handsome Rob: Okay, you do raise a few good points. I admit I genuinely liked the Back-to-Back Badasses with Harry and Peter. And yes, the first movie really had everything you'd expect from a Spider-Man story.
I think people in general wouldn't hate Amazing Spider Man 2 so much if Sony hadn't tried to overstuff the movie with lots of stuff that was ultimately set up for Sinister Six, as well as the whole Electro/Green Goblin working together subplot. Either make Goblin the main villain or Electro, but don't try to have them both.
Also, there was no need to kill Gwen in the goddamn second movie of your planned four movies when pretty much everyone liked Peter and Gwen's relationship because of the actors and characters' chemistry together.
I don't know, I kinda liked the Villainous Friendship between Harry and Electro. But I admit that when Goblin arrived right after Electro's defeat, I was thinking "Oh God, it's not over yet?!"

Nah man, I'm kidding. That was a good one.
Just wanted to be different.
One Strip! One Strip!
