Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

That's definitely possible. Personally I walked into the movie with the expectation that Hope van Dyme must at least meet the standard of War Machine in the first Iron Man movie and she exceeded that standard. While she never had the suit she played a pivotal role in the climax and got to use the ant-controlling aspect of the Wasp powers doing it. She was also explicitly presented with the Wasp suit at the end rather then it simply being foreshadowed.
While I think it's a safe bet that we'll see her in Infinity War, I do hope she'll at least get a cameo prior to that. Either in Civil War, even if she just pops in for a minute or two to help with whatever Scott Lang's doing, or heck an episode of Agents of SHIELD since her powers are hardly outside a TV show's budget. Basically I don't want to have to wait until 2018 to see her in the Wasp costume

i thought ronan was really, really bland, personally. serviceable, certainly, but Got G was good for its quirky take on space operas and its great visuals, not the villain.

Lee Pace going Large Ham made Ronan very entertaining to me, personally.

Who gets top billing?
I can understand why people were disappointed with Ultron (I will confess I'd like to ask Whedon why he did decided to do him like that), but I've never really seen a robot villain like that, so I'll cut him some slack there.
I thought he had some menacing bits here and there, at least.

Oh God! Natural light!Seeing as Ant-Man did only soso box office-wise (though still good enough considering), the name change may be to the film's benefit.
Counting foreign box office, it has already grossed $114 million. It's budget was $130 million. It's only so-so by the standards of the MCU's other movies — $58 million opening weekend is one of the lowest (although still not as low as Incredible Hulk), but Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger both were in the $60-65 million range for their opening weekends.
So I'd say, so far, it's pretty average. (Also, it was #1 at the box office, so there's that.)

So what was the deal with Wright not doing anything with Hope anyway?
And Janet only had a mention in his original script as well.
As I understand it, the movie was even more self contained then it was in this (with the falcon fight being added in; I hadn't even noticed the two were never in the same scene together until someone brought it up, which is actually pretty impressive for a tossed in scene like that).
What exactly was Wright doing?
One Strip! One Strip!Lowest opening weekend since The Incredible Hulk.
Of course, as the article itself points out, context is key. When you consider the lower budget, relatively short advertisement season, public Wright drama, "lame" main character, and so on, it's not a bad performance at all. It's not the runaway success Guardians of the Galaxy was, but it's all relative. Doesn't mean Marvel won't still want to aim for more in the future.

True. While it might not be the crushing, massive success the MCU typically enjoys (unless it's box office gets some serious legs), it's not a bomb by any stretch of the imagination and will likely turn a reasonable profit by the time it's out of theaters.
On a practical level this means Ant-Man and Wasp won't be cut out of future projects (which could of happened if it bombed) and we'll probably get another film in the Ant-Man franchise somewhere in Phase 4. Had it been a massive success they might of fast-tracked a sequel into Phase 3.
