Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

There was subtext with Mike Peterson and how his son idolized all the white superheroes: Cap, Thor, Iron Man
I think the subtext was less about representation and more about the powerless versus the powerful:
"You said if we worked hard, if we did right, we'd have a place. You said it was enough to be a man. But there's better than man. There's gods. And the rest of us? What are we? They're giants. We're what they step on."
I know there is some screencaps on Tumblr that have his son asking where the black superheroes are, but those are faked. He never says that in the episode.

Seriously, I don't want to sound like a broken record here, but representation is important, and it's actually something that the DC Extended Universe has done a really good job on so far, such with the extremely diverse cast of Suicide Squad, a Cyborg movie announced, etc. Marvel needs to learn from them a little more.
@Tuckerscreator: Oh my god that dubsmash war. Oh my god.
It should probably also be pointed out that recent years have shown that if the success of films like Furious 7 and The Maze Runner are any indication, having diverse casts or at least some prominent nonwhite characters is a good business decision as well. I believe that's why Helen Cho was cast in the first place.
Word of God for those seeing Ant-Man soon, is to look at out for several very important Freeze Frame Bonuses that tie into future movies. [1]

One of them is tied to a slight character appearance spoiler but obviously we all know about it by now thanks to the TV spots.

Thread hopping.
Catching a Friday Matinee. Glad that the Ant-Man is getting some props.
My only regret is that they used Scott instead of Hank. I think Scott is cool, but Hank needs some positive press.
Re-call how things were going for Tony Stark when his movie came out. It's the reason he managed to pull himself out of that shit actually, and lets be honest, he needed it. Ant-Man could have done the same for Hank.
I'm sure old school hipster hero Hank will be great, but this movie might have been the first step in getting him out of the wife beater reputation that refuses to release it's icy cold fingers from his neck.
One Strip! One Strip!Too soon, dude.
But yeah, I've always been of the opinion that Marvel would never use Hank as the main character for precisely that reason. I mean, they could do everything they could to make sure he doesn't come across that way, but he would still be weighed down.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectProbably, but I'm sure Marvel wasn't complaining.
As to diversity: It'll take a while for the Movie Division of Marvel to fully catch up with their Comics Division (which has been exceptional in this regard), but it's getting there.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectI always feel that threads get stuck in certain discussion loops. In the Marvel thread it's the diversity loop.
It is worth having that discussion, I'm just amused by how often we get stuck on it for a few pages.

Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectI seriously can't wait for Ant-Man. Heck, it may even manage to dethrone Mad Max Fury Road as my favorite film of the summer if all goes well.
Based on early reviews, they say that Rudd and Pena give some of the most memorable performances in the MCU, and that it is packed with lots of details and bonuses to look out for. Heck, the only people who seem to be overly negative towards it almost always bring up Wright's departure, and that it's not "groundbreaking".
If Wright had stayed on, do you think the film would've been better?
Fans probably will have been harder on it, though. And for good reason, since Wright is the one who killed off Janet.
As it looks right now, the movie isn't perfect as far as that goes, but by making Hope one of the main characters is a definite improvement. Here's hoping she's the Wasp by Infinity War...or even Civil War.
I am kind of tired of hearing that Wright would have done better. We don't know that. Considering that he is the main reason the project got delayed for so long, I rather praise the director who got it done than the one who maybe had done it better if he finally got off his butt to do so. I don't even want to know how much the delays have cost the studio.
And concerning the casting of Tilda Swinton: She looks perfect for the role. So why not wait and see what Marvel has in mind? Yes, representation is important, but if you call for colorblind castings it means that sometimes a white person will be the one who gets the role.
Also, I love the TV cast. And that we finally got to see Captain America giving Peggy a proper kiss.

For diversity's sake, maybe not, but in the terms of making a great movie, yes, yes definitely.
Considering there's an obvious amount of Wright still in the film is pretty telling, too.
Though the dude may have some issues with representation for women, the entire Cornetto trilogy is pretty perfect (Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World'sEnd), and Scott Pilgrim is a pretty alright movie, if at the very least visually awesome.

That's great for you. But you shouldn't begrudge people who do care.
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."
