Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

A Caper has to be fun. I can't think of any heist movie which doesn't have an element of fun in it.

Not... really. Really, any chance for comedy is squandered by having Michael Cera as the lead. That dude has the charisma of a particulalry ugly tree.

But that's why it's Michael Cera in the lead in the first place.

It's definitely rather different from the books.

For one thing, Ramona feels...I don't know, happier? More emotive, that's for sure.

It also helps that it takes place over a longer period of time.

The supporting cast is all aces, though. And the visual aesthetic—which I'm positive is the only reason Wright wanted to do the film—is fantastic.

I enjoyed the Scott Pilgrim movie. Despite it not being especially good.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

[up]comicwriter, do you remember an article where they went over her original Gotg script? I know Gunn changed it later but I seem to remember an article that talked about the changes.

[up]I do as well. I'll try to find it. Off the top of my head I think the major changes from her draft were said to be that Nova was in it, none of the stuff with the music or Walkman was in it, and most of the jokes and stuff with Yondu ended up coming from Gunn.

I feel like if the Walkman wasn't in it, the movie would have tanked, and I'm only kind of joking. Music was such a big part of Guardians.

I think we talked about the MCU music before Ao U came out and aside from Gotg(which is mostly licensed music)we could only really recall 6 or 7 tracks. Licensed tracks and the main Avengers theme stand out.

Black Sabbath and AC/DC was pretty important to Iron Man.

Yeah, Gunn added in the Walkman and the entire soundtrack, but the rest of the characters and settings came from Nicole Perlman. (Although the first draft was said to have both Nova and Bug, I believe.)

On the whole, I think Gunn might have changed the dialogue significantly, too, but the overall characters and plot details may be quite similar to Perlman's version. (Which is probably why Marvel wanted her to write another movie.)

Am I the only one who notices that Jon's shirt doesn't have the Punisher Skull?

Speaking of The Punisher, something I wanted to ask.

We know Frank's family will be shot to death, but my question is...who should be the ones pulling the triggers:

  • Agents of HYDRA, which could tie well with the bigger side of the MCU since WS made them a legit threat in the 21st century. (Not to mention it could give way to Easter eggs concerning possible threats to HYDRA's plans.) Or...

  • ...followers of Fisk, which could tie well with the grittier side of the MCU as it would give Frank enough reason to hunt down Fisk and be at odds with Matt?

It's probably not going to be HYDRA. It might be Fisk.

In the comics, Castle's family is just killed by random mobsters because they accidentally witnessed a mob killing.

[up]I prefer that way, frankly. Castle's vendetta is against the concept of crime itself. He goes after generic criminals, not anyone specific. Give much of a face to his family killers and things become more personal.

Yeah all that really matters is that they weren't supposed to die. That's sort of the point. They were innocent people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Am I the only one who notices that Jon's shirt doesn't have the Punisher Skull?

It's probably not a good idea to wear that in public during the daytime.

Though don't the writers, much like Batman's writers, every once in a while try a new failed attempt to introduce a new villain that's all like "I WAS BEHIND IT ALL ALONG!" in an attempt to make it personal or something?
