Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

....I hope you're parroting the joke from Daredevil and not intentionally getting her last name wrong.

Well it's technically both, isn't it?

I'm parroting the joke but the joke involves deliberately getting her name wrong.

In the last scene Matt holds Karen's hand and there is a lingering look which is shot in a way which implies romance (never mind that Karen already made the receipt which was reserved for her husband for Matt and Foggy).

Claire might have had a smaller role than Karen and Vanessa, but she is easily my favourite female character in Daredevil. So to me, she is important. I was celebrating when the news broke that she would be back in the role in all Netflix Marvel show.

In the comics, both Karen and Elektra are major love interests for DareDevil. They also both got fridged by Bullseye; Matt has a very full fridge. So, y'know, let's not.

That's not even counting the love interests who survived but ended up crippled or driven insane.

[up][up][up]I agree with you on Claire. Sadly it still doesn't make her more significant, which is why I got confused about worry of the show "dropping" her sadly non existent plot thread.

Wolverine's fridge is the only one I can think of that's packed quite as tightly as Matt's.

That just makes it worse in Matt's case given that Wolverine has been on earth way longer.

Edit- Not sure the right way of describing Wolverine's immortality, but IIRC the guy has been able to hook up/hooking up since at least the mid 1800s.

If the writer of Origin had been paying attention, yes, he would be.

But Marvel's still insisting he's Canadian by birth.

In any case, I am pro more Claire in the show and contra a Matt/Karen romance. I don't care if it happens in the comics, Pepper never married Happy in the movies either. They should go with what works in the show, not with what is written in the comics. Arrow practically destroyed itself by wanting to stick to the Black Canary they originally had in mind, no matter what the audience felt about it. It would be too bad if Daredevil made the same mistake. Now, if they somehow manage to create chemistry between Karen and Matt, all power to them, but I don't see it happening. Plus, it would be somewhat nice if Karen isn't reduced to being the love-interest but allowed to have her own arc as she did in the first season. I also hope that they don't turn her into the shows punching bag. She gets enough of that in the comics.

I thought Matt and Karen had a really nice friendship, and in fact had plenty of chemistry, but yeah, I don't really want them to be a romantic couple.

Been looking up the reviews for Ant-Man. A lot of the more negative reviews seem to focus on the fact that Edgar Wright wasn't on board for the final film.

Heck, that's a sticking point for many critics; Marvel Studios doesn't let the directors get much say in the final product because they are so focused on making everything fit into their plan. Your thoughts?

I really don't think who a director is should factor into a review.

It can factor into anticipation, but if it's good why are you gonna take points off for it? It's like "Man, this movie is great, but I dunno I kinda wish this other person had made the movie and that was the only thing that was different."

"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."

That is what makes Marvel Studios be Marvel Studios. They need to do that else everything falls apart. Of course, the don't need to make everything interconnected, but that is what put them on the map. That is what make them unique in the industry. The movies would lose a lot if not for this.

Yes, it is great when directors can fully realize their vision for whatever movie they are making. But it is also great Marvel is able to do something like what they are doing. If a director want to do things their way without the studio meddling over, they can do it elsewhere.

Of course, I am assuming Marvel is being upfront about it to the directors. By that point I think it is obvious, but if Edgar Wright went to the project thinking he would have more freedom then what he ultimately had, then that suck.
