Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Thor's going to be really pissed when he gets back home only to find Surtur burning the worlds.

Do you think it's going to be Surtur or will he be Hijacked By Loki?

The movie is called Ragnarok. It kind of has to have one of the villains connected to Ragnarok as its villain and they're all pretty much above Loki in terms of power.

(Also they had Surtur in one of their new games)

I like that many people in the comments are playing along.

Man, it is pretty scary to think that you could kill someone when you're small. Ant man ain't nothing to fuck with.

It's odd that I never actually contemplated how deadly that would be.

Cool use of detail there. Nice bit of "realism" in terms of the implication of the power. Unlike Scott, Hank Pym definitely knows how to punch

Interesting that the fake news piece describes Scott as a cyber criminal. Like learning that because in the comics, he's a fairly intelligent guy and the previews haven't really given that sense.

[up][up]Funny that a joke almost exactly like that is one of the top comments.

Bad taste, but I laughed anyway.

This Christine Everheart thing has some potential. Good and accessible way to flesh out the state of the MCU as it gets more complicated.

Really disappointing. Though I'll agree with her take that if they didn't see eye to eye now it's better to call it a quits before we end up with yet another Creator Backlash case.

It's too bad, but she is right. If she doesn't feel that she can mesh well with what Marvel has in mind, she shouldn't do it. We certainly don't need another female director who steps down practically immediately after getting hired for a Superhero movie. I am sure Marvel will find someone eventually.
