Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Though the warrior woman version of her is all Marvel, I don't think the myths depict her as a fighter...

[up]Yeah, I just meant that there's a bit better reason why people are pairing those two than with WW and Supes.

Amora is not a canon character at all, though. She has some characteristics of Freya, but Freya was later introduced as a separate character.

To clarify, by "canon" you mean the Norse myths. Not the Marvel comics canon, which most people would assume you mean in a conversation like this.

Tony and Pepper aren't dating in the comics and Bruce and Natasha were never an item in the comics. Yet these relationships exist in the movies.

Mind you I don't hate Jane as much as some people. I think the Thor movies have a lot of problems outside of just her.

Be fair to Jane. She fondles Thor's hammer quite a lot in the comics of late. He's even complimented that no one's ever worked his hammer like she can.

I could write a while article about what the problem with Thor and Jane is...oh, wait, I actually did.

But Thor and Sif in the movies doesn't work at all either. It always annoys me to see her pining over him, and it always annoys me how people point out that she would be the better fit. Why? Because she happens to be the same race? I really don't like the implications there.

Thor and Sif are excellent fighters in an action focused genre. For some, that's all they need. Why do you think Selina Kyke was better received than Rachel Dawes?

That's an out of universe explanation for shipping. Swanpride is talking about the people in universe.

The only person who pointed out that Sif was a better fit for Thor was Odin and Odin in the comics has a long history of not wanting Thor to be with Jane (or any human) at all.

I don't remember anyone else trying to push Thor/Sif in the movies.

[up]Frigga did, too, though more indirect.

I also felt that the remark of Odin came kind of out of nowhere...there was no built up to it at all.

“We literally just crossed the halfway mark of '[Captain America:] Civil War' last week, it’s day 42 or 43 of 80," said Feige, as reported by Collider. "We start filming 'Doctor Strange' in London in November. We start shooting 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' in February-March [2016]. We start filming 'Thor: Ragnarok' and 'Spider-Man' around the same time, around June of next year.”

Was that the part in the second movie where Thor is looking up at the sky and thinking about Jane? Eh, Odin is just being Odin - he's halfway to being a decent father, but also just a prick, too. He was like that in the comics, where he tried to force Thor to breakup with Jane a bunch of times.

Movie Odin isn't perfect but he's far from the jackass his mythological and comic counterparts are. It's one of the reasons I think Loki's claims of a horrible childhood might not be too accurate.

From best to worst I would say it's Modern Comic!Odin>MCU!Odin>Classic Comic!Odin>Myth!Odin.

Don't tell me this isn't an awesome picture.

I took the encouragement for Thor to let go of Jane and pursue Sif to be a roundabout way of bringing the wayward prince's interests back to Asgard in general, personally. Thor is meant to be King of Asgard and instead he's pining for a world that is not his and a woman he can never have.

Odin and/or Frigga see this, and presume that if Thor can find love in Asgard, he'll stop wanting to dash off and play with the humans every five seconds. Sif is just the best available option in that regard, because he knows her.

Does it bother anyone we don't see much of the Asgardian culture beyond their obsession with combat? Even if warriors are more valued I'd like to see other aspects to them.
