Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][lol]Yeah, it was just dumb. Seriously, that is how they defeat the villain? That was just pathetic. I mean, I admit that I liked Rocket and Groot, but that was about it.

Ok, who let Light Yagami in here?

They defeated the villain using the Power Gem. The dance was just to distract him long enough to get it away from him.

[up] This was not exactly a serious movie, you know.

I mean, it's actually kind of fitting, as Ronan takes himself extremely seriously, so much so that he is momentarily thrown completely off his game by Peter challenging him to a dance-off.

I was fine with it. They knew nobody but the hardcore fans were gonna take a movie with a gun-toting raccoon seriously so they went all out with the ridiculousness.

I found the dance-off hilarious, and I thought it worked, considering the tone of the movie.

When we're done, there won't be anything left.

Villains I want to see in new Spider-Man movies:

  • Vulture(if they go with the part of his life where he was doing crime to get money for a operation for his cancer sick grandson I would be more interested in him)
  • Black Cat
  • Hobgoblin
  • Shocker(should probably just me a minor villain in a movie and more serve as a distraction)
  • Kraven
  • Chameleon
  • Carnage
  • Scorpion

[up]I'd rather them not make Vulture into a retread of Sandman from Spider-Man 3.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

I'm more concerned about the Vulture being a retread of the canned Spiderman 4 film that Raimi went Screw This, I'm Outta Here! on.

[up]x7 I was OK with the danceoff but on the whole the movie gave off a bit of a tryhard vibe with some of the humor, so...

Also it'd be hard to do Carnage without first doing Venom again.

Like I said, I think a Chameleon-Kraven team's the best bet.

I'd like to see Shocker too.

One of the things Amazing 2 did pretty well was show Spider-Man also dealing with minor villains and - in the end - thugs with superpowers in addition to the big, overarching plot driving guys. The MCU needs more of that, imo.

I just would prefer it if Peter starts out relatively small before he has to face the "big guys"...and if some of the villains like the Lizard and the Green Goblin are first introduced as "normal people" before they become villains one or two movies later.

I found this quote from James Gunn in that IO9 GotG 2 article interesting:

While he declined to give any specifics, he indicated that the film’s scope will come from a closer focus on some of the characters, and that we’ll learn a lot more about fathers, something that’s been rumored about Chris Pratt’s character Starlord.

He's talking about fathers in plural, so presumably it's not just Quill's daddy who's gonna feature in the movie. I guess the movie will either introduce Moondragon and have her be Drax's daughter in the MCU continuity too, or it'll delve deeper into the father/daughter relationships between Thanos, Gamora, and Nebula (I presume Karen Gillan has signed for the sequel too?). Or it could do both. I do hope the relationship between Thanos and his "daughters" gets fleshed out more, because it could make both Thanos and Nebula into more three-dimensional villains.

And like I said a few pages ago, if they decide to adapt the Nebula subplot from The Infinity Gauntlet, the father/daughter thing would make the whole thing more interesting and dramatic than in the comics, where Nebula had never met Thanos before, and she may have even lied about being his granddaughter.

Is GOTG 2 coming before Captain Marvel?

If so, they could totally have Moondragon and Phyla-Vell be the lead in to Captain Marvel if Mar-Vell's involved.

I just wanna hear some of more of Awesome Mix Vol. 2.

My story with music is basically the same as Peter's (minus having absolutely no knowledge of media past the 80's, that is), one of several reasons I love the soundtrack of the movie.

It occurs to me that both Spiderman franchises end on tragedy.

Harry dies and Peter and MJ console each other.

Gwen dies and Peter reluctantly goes back to his day job.

And in the comics, Civil War is shortly before Aunt May gets shot and Peter gives up his marriage in a Faustian deal to save her.

We are almost certainly not going to get One More Day in Spider-Man's reboot.

...unless....

  • "Hey, Kevin, I got a great idea for how we can introduce Spider-Man in the MCU with a whole new cast and direction and everything, but without rebooting. In fact, we can UNDO the previous reboot in the process!"
  • "...out of morbid curiosity, I am going to say proceed and then brace for immediate regret."
  • "Okay, get this. To resurrect Harry after he died in Spider-Man 3, Peter made a deal with the devil to bring him back, sacrificing his relationship with Mary Jane. The result was the Amazing franchise. But after Gwen died in Amazing 2, he makes another deal which results in the new franchise."
  • "Leave my office now, Joe."

Apparently the Yellowjacket armor/suit is 100% CGI in the whole movie. Stroll apparently really buffed up before the movie because he thought he was going to wear a suit but then was told "Nah, we just need your face in front of this green screen for this."

Oh, good. A fully CGI costume has worked so well in the past.

You know what, Iron Man is a fully CGI costume and that worked out great. Ignore me, I'm stupid.

IIRC they got Square Enix's Visual Works division to do Tony's face whenever he has to be seen "inside" the helmet so he's pretty much all CGI when he's in the suit.

Edit: You know what I just realised? When Wasp finally gets her own suit in 5+ years it's going to be very different from any of her comic costumes(of which she has had many but this is the one most hoped for)for one simple fact due to the changes the MCU has made to how the shrinking works: she has to have a helmet on at all times while small much like Ant-Man unless she wants to die directly after shrinking down due to not being able to breathe.

Maybe if Janet was a superhero early enough then Pym fuckery may have altered her DNA or body structure so that Hope has some inborn ability to survive in the Microverse.

[up][up]That is a good point. From what I hear we won't really see Janet van Dyme's face in the movie at all, even in flashbacks. So she will have to have a very different suit then what her classic one looked like.

For the Hope van Dyme Wasp I'm assuming that if we see it at all in Ant-Man it'll just be an unmodified Yellowjacket suit, and any future iterations will evolve from that.
