Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I'd say Kraven. But I'm biased: I actually am Kraven and am just posting here to know which of you are the best prey to hunt.

I also loved Iron Man 3. I don't like the Mandarin so I didn't care about that twist, and it was nice seeing Rhodey be a bro and not act like he had a giant stick up his ass. Killian wasn't great and I wish they did a lot more with Maya but I did like seeing Tony be so resourceful.

I'm trying to think which villain would best in a school social circle setting. Norman Osborn is the obvious answer. The chameleon is a good choice though as he can slot into anywhere. Hydroman, as lame a villain as he is, has the benefit of actually being a peer of Peter. The Kingpin would be worth while if they have Black Cat in it.

EDIT: [up][up][up] I'd love to see a Kraven series where he hunts increasingly out of his leauge 616 characters, with the catch phrase [blank], [blank] is the most dangerous prey.

Gamma Monsters. Gamma Monsters are the most dangerous prey.

Midgaurd Serpents. Midgaurd Serpents are the most dangerous prey.

DREAD LORD DORMAMMU! DREAD LORD DORMAMMU is the most dangerous prey.

Kingpin wouldn't work since he's besties with Daredevil now.

Chameleon or Mysterio could work. Probably not both, though, it'd be silly to have two villains specialized in deception at the same time. Perhaps Chameleon and Kraven as a team.

@Gaon: Ooh! Ooh! Me! Me!Pick Me! Pick me! I'm already all tender and juicy and everything!grin

More seriously though, Kraven's probably the best bet at this point, as I can't think of any other high-profile rouges that haven't been used yet. You've got others like the Jackal and the Spider Slayers, but the latter isn't exactly movie material, and the Jackal only really works after Spidey's been around a while.

...

Maybe they could come up with a new villain?

Spider-Man has been in dire need of a shared cinematic universe for a long time now. Supervillains popping up in the same proximity as superheroes is an easier pill to swallow in a setting where superheroes and supervillains exist all across the world. The Amazing reboot put all the super-eggs into Oscorp's basket to explain it, but the original Raimi trilogy suffered tremendously from the "Why only here and now?" question.

You could say this about any superhero franchise pre-MCU. I don't see it as anymore contrived than the Avengers not showing up in IM 3 which a lot of people insisted should have happened.

Spider Slayers might work if they were reimagined as, say, Elite Mooks, but that would probably be better for the sequel.

Kraven would be a good choice, although I'd kind of like to see Mysterio.

They could come up with a new villain (especially now that Inhumans are running around), but you don't want to start with one.

[up][up]Honestly, I completely forgot about Mysterio. Somehow though, I just can't imagine him holding a movie on his own. Then again, if most of the movie's focused on Peter and his personal life, and Mysterio is just the 'Villain Of The Day', maybe it could work.

I've mentioned before how much I like the Spectacular take on Mysterio. Also struck me that with the MCU's emphasis on magic being Sufficiently Advanced Technology, I think it would work great to have a Mysterio who claims his technology is magic.

Chameleon would be really cool if that's how they worked in some MCU stuff.

Can you imagine what Chameleon could do if he pretended to be Tony Stark for instance? I'm thinking like how in Spectacular he pretends to be Norman Osborn on a couple occasions.

But as for villains not yet used, the one I really want to see the most is Mysterio. Maybe even a Mysterio / Chameleon team-up.

Mysterio/Chameleon would be a bit redundant, I think. A brains-and-brawn pair of Chameleon and Kraven would work better I think, especially since they have an established history together and are cousins.

Mysterio and Chameleon could work together with the Tinkerer like in Spectacular Spider-Man.

Actually, y'know what, the whole movie should just be exactly the same as Spectacular Spider-Man down to the last detail.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

[up] That's what I was thinking too. With the two as a team, you have Mysterio for wide scale illusions and highly visible villainy and Chameleon staying undetected and/or imitating someone very specific for a prolonged period of time, using the situation Mysterio creates to spread influence and control. Since they have similar fields, they compliment each other very well - both being able to use their skills to aid the other in what they do.

In a set up like that, Mysterio would be The Heavy and the front man while Chameleon would be the one who was really doing the truly nasty and possibly personal stuff. Peter or Spider-Man could even know who Chameleon is imitating, setting up for The Reveal later on.

I'd like it if both were secretly playing each other and the audience was left wondering who would be the final villain to face Spider-Man. Also, instead of his signature mask the Chameleon's face could be kept hidden from audiences in shadows or he could be a voice on the phone when not in disguise.

Interesting about the Ancient One, though I would've preferred them to go with the hard route and kept the Ancient One Tibetan but revamped him to be more authentic and less of a caricature than given him a Race Lift.
