Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Going to be that guy and break the chain here with a "meh".

Hulk 2003 got crap for using comic book transitions (among other things). I don't see what was so amazing here.

As for Phylla and Moondragon, they can just edit out the kisses and the most explicit stuff while leaving in the rest of it and treating it as heavy Les Yay for countries where that doesn't fly. It's not like the Marvel-going fanbase in China for instance doesn't consider the other films to be chock-full of Ho Yay and Les Yay already, so they probably have a little room to maintain plausible deniability.

[up][up]The cousin line makes me think of them awkwardly editing in references to how they've totally kissed boys before.

Oh my god. I saw a compilation of all the times the Sailor Moon dub removed any lesbian references and replaced it with "cousins."

It was hilarious. And sad.

Question: If they had MCU!Phyla in one of her comic outfits instead of giving her something all new which one would you pick? Her Vell family one, her Captain Marvel one, her Quasar outfit(since it seems unlikely they're going to have another character with the title and her already having it in the animated series) or her Martyr one from after she gives up everything she can to get Heather back alive?

Edit: Her casual "everything is fine and we can relax at last" outfit that's only seen for one page btw. Things are never fine in Cosmic Marvel for long.

Eh. None of these quite divorce her enough from the Captain Marvel mythos as I feel like they're probably gonna try to do if they plug her into GOTG 2. Or, rather, none of these make her look as distinct from Carol as I would like.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

I think the thing to keep is the hooded cape, clearly.

And the sword.

Quasar was always my favorite, and it's the right level of pragmatic for film.

Something that looks far more like her classic outfit than her at the time current one(she later switched to the Guardians of the Galaxy uniform after coming back from the dead thanks to Phyla).

That first costume is the most ridiculous female super hero costume ever.

Moondragon is really fond of her legs isn't she? I wonder how much time a week she dedicates to shaving them.

It's not like she gets much use out of it in Conquest because she ends up a dragon after a whole bunch of mooks are about to overwhelm her girlfriend.

Can they integrate the part where someone once defeated Moondragon by forcing her to listen to Korn?

Guessing Wasp will join the Avengers after helping out in one of the IW parts. Civil War is already too crowded and none of the other movies before IW are the type of movies where Ant-Man or Wasp would show up. My guess is Ant-Man 2 as the opening movie to the Phase after IW along with Gotg3 as the movie coming out later that year.

I just hope this means Infinity War will have a Mythology Gag featuring the original five Avengers. Or three of them with the other two's successors. You know what I mean.

Is the Netflix Daredevil part of the MCU? I've only seen a couple episodes, but I noticed the references to something destroying half of New York. Was this a subtle nod to the Avengers?
