Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I know. I'm not taking these as gospel, but I'm crossing my fingers.

At least one guy said he liked it better than Ultron, so who knows.

At the every least, there's no way Ant-Man will be half as convoluted as Age of Ultron.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

In an interview with IGN, Benicio Del Toro said that he most likely won't show up as the Collector in the sequel.

"I would like to keep working on that character, though," he said, after revealing his uncertainty. "It was kind of like a cameo. I would like to keep developing the character based on what's written in the comic books. I'd like to see some different sides. I had a blast working with James Gunn and the cast — but it's not up to me."

So he likes the character as he appears in the comics, and is concerned that Gunn won't be taking him in that direction?

I suppose that makes sense. The Collector is one of the most powerful being in the universe (he's either an Elder or a Celestial - I think it's the former), though there's little to say the he's isn't hiding his true nature in the Guardians movie it still doesn't look like the MCU is taking him in that direction.

Edit: Oh, wait. Duh. He's saying that he wants to reappear, but Gunn and/or the MCU might not be interested in continuing to use him.

I only ask, because I read on one of the recent comments that he couldn't be used. I'm torn. WM's never been one of my favorite characters, but I have enjoyed some of his stories ad he's a classic member. Still, I read that he's the only Avenger Joss Whedon has no interest in using.

Considering Joss isn't writing nor directing the next two Avengers movies, I doubt that will be the issue. The bigger issue is, um, nobody really cares about Wonder Man.

Not even Carol Danvers who actually went out with him multiple times cares about Wonder Man. It's probably all the betrayals(Look, Carol has really bad luck with men).

Pretty much the only time I actually liked Simon was in his Hollywood cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy.

I like Wonder Man sometimes.

He's a fun character because they could use him to reprise some of Cap's man out of time stuff with some deep insecurities. He's the strongest avenger sometimes but also the one most afraid of fighting because he actually died once.

There's a lot of potential there but he's been under utilized, misused and put in some truly terrible outfits.

I didn't know Whedon was done with the Avengers. I'm still not sure how I feel about Spidey being in these movies even though he's one of my favorite characters.

Spider-Man has been in dire need of a shared cinematic universe for a long time now.

Supervillains popping up in the same proximity as superheroes is an easier pill to swallow in a setting where superheroes and supervillains exist all across the world. The Amazing reboot put all the super-eggs into Oscorp's basket to explain it, but the original Raimi trilogy suffered tremendously from the "Why only here and now?" question.

Spider-Man's been part of a shared universe since Amazing Spider-Man #1. If anything, he has slightly more precedent to be in the MCU than the Avengers do.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

One of these days I should do a post on the insane amount of crossovers Spider-Man has had. There were times when Spidey, Daredevil and Nova would all crossover with each other for a issue only to leave and go to the other book before the next one. Once Nova saved Daredevil from drowning and then saved Spidey from a villain of the week in one issue.

[up]There was literally a book dedicated to Spider-Man crossovers. Marvel Team-Up. It lasted 150 issues in its first run. Spider-Man is the biggest crossover whore in comics.

Before him, it was the Thing.

After them it was Wolverine and then Deadpool.

It's not about him being in the MCU, it's just that I'd like to see classic members of the Avengers involved first. For a long time, the Avengers have nominally been the Marvels flagship book (like JLA over at DC), but they weren't marketed like it. Now that they are getting big, I'd like to see some of the earlier characters show up in the Avengers movies first. It could be worse though. It could be Wolverine.

Also, I don't think it's that strange that the super science is all happening in New York. The US still leads the world in science and technological innovation. What's strange is that it's all happening to people with a personal connection to Peter Parker (his best friends father, his mentor, the man who killed his uncle, his rival at work, his best friend etcetera).

So far we've either had a number of classic Avengers in the movies or with their own films coming up, though.

We've already gotten Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Falcon, War Machine and Quicksilver, while Ant-Man, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel are coming soon.

I'm not overly fond of the prospect of yet another Spider-Man movie but I do think the Avengers haven't exactly been hard up to make it to the big screen.

Y'know what'd be fun, if Peter Parker had a bunch of cameos (when things take the characters to New York) as... Peter Parker: Photographer for the Daily Bugle, rather than Spider-Man - with the Bugle itself having more of a presence in the universe now. Even without him showing up in person, stuff like "Photos By Peter Parker" appearing on newspapers.

I was walking around today and I saw a newspaper stand selling some fake/pirated toys. There was a Black Widow among the Avengers! Well... Buzz Lightyear was there too, but if they can do it, why can't Marvel? tongue
