Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

There Might Be a Whole New Villain Appearing in Avengers: Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War Parts I & II An alleged casting call for the film has gone out, with a brief plot description for the first film in the duology—introducing a new villain alongside Thanos: The film is the first in a two-part sequel, in which Thanos plays a major role, along with the Magus. Adam Warlock’s bad side, the Magus, separates from his body and assembles the Infinity Gauntlet. Magus creates doppelgangers of Earth’s heroes as part of his plan to recreate a universe of evil. As the casting call says, in the comics the Magus is an embodiment of the dark side of cosmic hero (and Guardians of the Galaxy member) Adam Warlock, who’s given physical form after the character acquires the Infinity Gauntlet. As ever with rumors like this, take this with a major pinch of salt. [Spoiler TV]

Saying that the Magus will be creating a legion of evil Avengers in Infinity War is like saying Age of Ultron will be about an army of Ultrons taking over the world, killing most of the heroes, and then Wolverine and Sue Richards have to go back in time to stop him.

News outlets have not yet grasped the concept of Pragmatic Adaptation.

I really, really hope they're not gonna try to adapt Infinity War the comic, because it's just not very good. Magus is your stereotypical monologuing evil mastermind, all the other heroes besides Warlock and Thanos serve as nothing but cannon fodder, and pretty much the only really cool moment in the whole comic (Doom and Kang following Magus's trail and attempting to steal the Gauntlet from him) leads to nothing because Jim Starlin won't allow anyone but his pet characters (Warlock, Magus, and Thanos) to have any importance in the story.

I honestly hope MCU!Magus will be more like DnA!Magus than Starlin!Magus. That Magus could joke which Gunn probably likes.

If I ever had a cosmic cube, I'd shake it so much that when it evolved it'd have brain damage.

Cross Industries

There's also an international (aka 'Japanese') trailer out there that delves more into the family relationships. But it seems a bit spoilery.

Here it is for those interested. A LOT of new footage.

There's actually something funny and endearing about Pym saying the Iron Man suit is a joke compared to the Ant-Man suit. Rock on, Mr. Pym!

Why can't Wonder Man be used in the MCU?

I think he can be used? But since the movie Avengers already have three characters who are tough, strong and can fly (or jump really high), they'd need to come up with a fresh angle for him. Maybe they could emphasize Simon's fear of death, or his movie career and vanity?

They can't even use the "My brainwaves are part of Vision" part of his character due to Ao U.

The first Twitter reactions for Ant-Man are very positive. The general consensus is that apparently the two credit stingers are also huge, especially in comparison to some of the more recent ones.

Where did you get the idea he can't?

Oh, they brought back having two stingers? Cool.

Sorry, rest of my family and friends, looks like we do have to wait through all the credits!

[up][up][up]Honestly, while I think he can be used, I doubt that he will be used. I like Wondy, but he's never exactly been a high-profile or standout character; not even compared to his 'brother', Vision. (Who can't even be that in the MCU continuity.) And even if he does show up, it probably won't be for a looooooooooooong time. Maybe after Infinity War?

Thanks for posting the Japanese trailer. Lot of new scenes and additional details. I like the detail of him working at Baskin Robbins. Feels like the kind of thing Nick Spencer would think of.

I guess Judy Greer is playing Scott's ex- had to google her name, the character is usually called Peggy, but she's Maggie in the film (presumably due to One-Steve Limit).

[up][up][up]Yeah his absence in the MCU is likely due to being a low priority character more than any legal issue, which is why I was surprised at the suggestion.

@Swan: Eh, most of those seemed very impressed with the movie. Not really in 'mixed' territory yet.

And there's a bunch of other Twitter comments posted in the comments section.

IIRC Age of Ultron also opened to rave reviews on Twitter, though the final product ended up being a mixed bag.
