Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

The very first minute of Avengers 3 has Thanos showing up out of nowhere and cold clocking Tony Stark in the face.
What follows is one extremely long brawl that spirals throughout the galaxy like big fight at the end of Blazing Saddles, lasting for four hours straight.
They add running counters for who is currently in or out of the fight.

Some more info on Civil War
. The candidates for Spidey were asked to read with Robert Downey Jr. because apparently whatever the cameo is, involves Spider-Man and Iron Man.
Sounds like they might make an homage to how in the Civil War storyline, Spider-Man was on Iron Man's side but later sided with Cap.
Considering Magus is so heavily tied to Adam Warlock who is tied to the Infinity Gauntlet, it's not that surprising. The bigger question is what kind of role he'll play in it, like whether he'll be the Bigger Bad or The Dragon.
Also if this is legit, the timing of this casting makes me suspect even more that Adam Warlock will be a key player in GOTG 2.

Adam Warlock/Magus is/are (Time Travel is weird) Thanos' archenemy, particularly in regards to the Infinity Gauntlet. It'd be weird if they didn't show up.

What's interesting is Gunn had a Flip-Flop of God about whether or not that was Warlock's cocoon in the Collector's museum, so I'm thinking he changed his tune to try and throw people off the scent a little.
Thanos list of archenemies goes Captain Mar-Vell(until his death which Thanos kind of hated in his own way)>Adam Warlock/Magus>The Avengers.

Also yeah, he went from going "This is part of Warlock's origin in the comics and it's my favorite part of this set" to "That's just something the set guys inserted and I have no idea why they did it and it's not important" in 2 weeks.
Tom Holland has some sick moves.
In fact, he has a lot of shots of him doing some acrobatic stunts.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectWait, if Magus is gonna be in Infinity War, does that mean they're gonna adapt the actual "Infinity War" comic book (where Magus is the Big Bad and Thanos is on the side of the good guys) instead "Infinity Gauntlet" (where Magus doesn't appear)? Or are they gonna combine the two stories, so Thanos has the Gauntlet first, and Magus acquires it later? I hope they won't go that way, because I liked the whole Nebula twist in "Infinity Gauntlet", and I was hoping they'd do that in the movie too, whereas Magus in "Infinity War" was a fairly boring villain.
Anyway, the whole Magus/Warlock thing is such complex story (especially since Jim Starlin never really explains why Warlock must become Magus, except for some vague Because Destiny Says So justification), that I can't imagine they can do it in "Infinity War" alone, so I guess that means Warlock has to be introduced in the GotG sequel, right?

The Magus is simply Warlock after having gone insane in the future for a few reasons. Warlock stops himself from ever becoming Magus by locking the timeline where he goes insane off from reality and goes into exile. He later has to save reality in Guardians of the Galaxy by fixing a hole which he does by using a spare timeline he knew where to find(the Magus timeline). Magus comes back due to this and kills trillions of people and opens the way for the Cancerverse.
Edit: The Nebula twist was really boring because she can't use the Gauntlet and has to be tricked by Warlock to save reality. It's less than a issue and mostly serves to show that Warlock should have the Gauntlet because he isn't evil(because he later throws away all evil in him which creates the Magus in IW IIRC)and knows not to use it.

Slight correction to that: Warlock doesn't "go into exile", he kills a future version of himself (via time travel), so that he would never become Magus. And later in the story he has now reached that point in the future, so his past version comes to kill him, and he dies (though his soul transfers to the Soul Gem, where it keeps on living.).
But the thing I don't understand is not how Warlock becomes Magus but why he becomes Magus. You have a mysterious cosmic being called the In-Betweener who's responsible for turning Warlock into Magus (against Warlock's protestations), but the only explanation the In-Betweener gives for his actions is that Magus must exist because he's an Avatar of Life. However, at this point Magus has already been revealed to be an intergalactic tyrant and a murderer of billions, so it doesn't make any sense that he should represent Life, and there's no further explanation what his role in the universal order of things was supposed to be.
Maybe Starlin might have explained and explored these concepts further if he'd had the chance, but his Warlock book was cancelled, so he had to tie up all loose ends in a couple of annuals. And when returned to these characters in the 90s, the whole Avatar of Life thing is forgotten and Magus is now stated to be Warlock's evil side. But there's still no explanation why the In-Betweener thought it was necessary to turn Warlock into Magus.
Compared to that, the Cancerverse arc in Nova/Guardians of the Galaxy actually explains the whole Avatar of Life concept much better, and there's also a good justification for how an Avatar of Life could become evil. I hope they'll adapt that storyline for the third GotG movie, because it'd make a really epic conclusion for their story.

I think the Nebula twist would work well in the movies because (unlike in the comics) they've built an antagonistic relationship of abusive father/vengeful daughter between the two, so her stealing the Gauntlet from him (and going mad because she hasn't the mental stability to handle it) would make into an effective Shakespearean tragedy. I like the moment in the comics too, because it happens at the darkest hour, when Thanos has beaten everyone who opposed him, even the most powerful beings in the universe, and he's only defeated because he completely ignored Nebula and her hatred of him, not thinking of her as significant at all. (Though it was later revealed that Thanos's subconscious self-defeatism played a part in it too.)
I always forget the time travel part of the saga because I read old Captain Marvel issues first and he sees Magus being killed by Warlock at one point and I only read the Warlock issue much later so I can never remember the finer details.
In the MCU I'm guessing Magus will be either just the dark side of Adam that he has always had or is created by the Soul Stone. I'm hoping they're going to adapt this scene
◊ because to people who know who Magus is it's a great moment of "Holy shit things are going to go bad".

Ten Answers to the Lingering Questions about MCU Spider-Man!
- Does the deal extend to his supporting cast? Nope! The MCU's Spider-Man will have none of his traditional supporting characters or fight any of his actual villains. In fact, they can't even legally call him Peter Parker! He's going to answer to Blind Pete. They're skimming over the origin story because the deal doesn't extend to the spider either, so instead, he's just a Mutant.
- Will Spider-Woman appear in the MCU? You might think that because Marvel now has legal rights to Spider-Man, his Distaff Counterpart is sure to follow. Regrettably, she will not be joining us, because even though the Spider-Man legal qualms are out of the way, those legal disputes were never a factor in the first place. They just didn't want her.
- Will any of the cast return? Ha ha ha, no. Maybe J.K. Simmons.
- Will Marvel retell Spider-Man's origin? That's not an unanswered question, y'all just weren't paying attention.
- Will Miles Morales appear in the MCU? What, in this movie? No. Ever? I don't know, this is a franchise that's going to be running for a long time. It could happen. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to be in the fallout shelter until the inevitable firestorm over this question ends.
- If Spider-Man is in Civil War, what role will he play? Can't hear you! Fallout shelter! Have the bombs stopped dropping yet?
- What does this mean for Marvel's other outstanding film rights? It means f*ck all, because the other rights you're thinking of are owned by Fox.
- How will this affect Spider-Man's comics? It may result in Spider-Man no longer being isolated to his own comic book universe. We might some day see a crossover or two between Spider-Man and other superheroes. Could Spider-Man joining the Avengers be on the horizon?! Maybe with Wolverine, another character famous for never interacting with any other part of Marvel's universe?! Only time will tell!
- Could Marvel buy back Spider-Man's rights wholesale? Nope, they're going to have to pay retail.
- Who will Spider-Man fight? You, if you keep asking questions like these ones.
So far none of the movies have been strict adaptations, so I imagine it won't but will probably incorporate elements of the story.
One of the news outlets (either Variety or Hollywood Reporter) claimed they were trying to find actual teen actors at one point, but they eventually decided against it because of all the issues with child labor laws that apply to actors.

And in today's "Didn't expect that" news, Leslie Bibb is reprising her role as the annoying reporter lady from the first two Iron Man movies for Civil War
.

It's two movies I really don't think they want to have the Avengers fight Thanos for four-five hours.
