Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Whoa! That came out of nowhere!

Ok, well, they said last week we'd get an announcement as early as this week, so it's not like they dropped it without warning, but I was expecting it more on Friday or something.

Well! Looks like we can calm down now. The MCU finally has their own Spidey!

Guess the only thing left to wonder is...how will the first two movie Spideys respond...

Anyhoo...

Welcome to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Holland! Hope you survive the experience! wink note

[up] He's doing this movie called "Cop Car".

...Which IIRC isn't in theaters yet.

Chip Zdarsky, a writer for Marvel, has the best response.

Ah, good old Chip. This reminds me that I'll have to pick up the new Kaptara tomorrow.

You know, this wouldn't be nearly as disappointing in spite of its inevitability if Marvel hadn't just announced Miles Morales is now their default comic Spider-Man.

I'm someone who is pro-Miles and even I'm tired of this debate.

Peter is still in the comics and is going to be Miles mentor(and Slott is still probably going to have a book with Peter since Miles book lacks a Amazing/Spectacular/etc, ugh) so it's not like he's dead or missing after the reboot.

[up][up][up] Er, are you sure?

I think the Spider-Man comic after Secret Wars 2015 has Miles and Peter in a mentoring thing.

Maybe it'll be like the recent Hawkeye comics, that have Clint Barton and Kate Bishop sharing the Hawkeye title or something?

EDIT: Gah, [nja]'d!

Plot twist: Peter Parker dies at the end of the new Spider-Man movie and his best friend (who in this version is Miles Morales) takes on the name.

It's not a debate?

See, this is why I focused on him being a baby. Everyone automatically assumes you're looking to argue if you even mention anything else.

They just announced who's gonna be Peter, for Pete's sake.

(No pun intended, but I'll just roll with it. tongue)

[up] I think Garfield's thirty-something...

Garfield is 31, and Toby Maguire is 39. I'm too lazy to do the math.

It was very obviously a joke.
