Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The last issue of everything ended with the world ending and everyone dying. That's what's happening at Marvel right now.

Everything died and then Doom saved a bunch of stuff by combining various worlds in Battleworld.

Secret Wars has been pretty awesome so far, actually.

Marvel is ripping off Crisis on Infinite Earths by reprising their Secret Wars story which itself was rushed out the gate to beat Crisis to the punch and DC is copying Marvel copying DC.

Good times!

Marvel is ripping off Crisis on Infinite Earths

Aside from the whole "Multiverse is ending" thing, the story isn't at all similar to Crisis on Infinite Earths. For one thing, the Crisis was about trying to stop the Multiverse from being destroyed and in Secret Wars, what remains of the Multiverse is destroyed in the first issue.

It seems that 'how it should end' mostly involves anticlimaxes

Yeah. I don't... think they understand how movies work.

Or comedy.

Fiction relies on stupidity to exist. Remove even a single stupid part and it'll get boring real fast.

Smashing.

[up](x3)(x2) I think the comedy is that these fixes would resolve the plot but ruin the movie. It's the delivery, along with healthy doses of meta-humor, that make it funny. Lots of gallows humor in this one because of Quicksilver and Civil War.

Let me state real quick that the part I least like about how it should have ended is the Superman-Batman cafe conversations.

Literally the entire set-up, joke and punchline is Batman saying "Because I'm Batman!" over and over.

"All you Fascists bound to lose."

I'm of the opinion that Super Cafe is the best thing that's ever been done with the characters of Batman and Superman.

My favorite bit was Falcon lamenting Civil War happening so soon with "I just got here!"

Speaking of Falcon, I watched Captain America 2: Winter Soldier for the first time today due to unforeseen events. I think I probably missed the first five or fifteen minutes, but overall it was alright.

I still haven't watched the first Captain America movie, by the way. Not in its entirety, at least.

First movie is alright. It's pretty great for the first half until the Howling Commandos are formed, when we're treated to a fun but underwhelming montage scene and then the film really goes downhill after the train scene.

To be honest I didn't like the film when I first saw it. I need to rewatch it, for Peggy Carter and Howard Stark if nothing else (since they're Ensemble Dark Horse's apparently). But, well, you can watch Avengers and Winter Soldier and not really miss a beat, other than a touching scene with Peggy in 2.

I will applaud it for this scene, though.

This is when you start to like Steve Rogers.
