Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

You ever notice that all the old humans are complacent and need to be destroyed to save them sci-fi used to be set in the far future. You know, instead of now.

Zeitgeist, I guess. I'm curious what the first stories to have that sort of thing were.

So now we can add the Punisher to the ranks of vigilantes in the MCU. Awesomesauce.

Man, I wonder if they are going to give him a spin-off?

If Hela ends up in the movies I hope she looks half this cool.

It's a good way to play it. The Punisher got his start as a villain in Spider-Man and DareDevil's comics and only became a protagonist when he proved popular with the fanbase. Given the dismal reception of the last cinematic outing the character had, testing the waters with a return to form and seeing if lightning strikes twice is the best way to do it.

This is... the least interesting character they could choose.

Guess I'll be skipping Daredevil in the second Defenders Wave, too.

I'm always up for Bernthal. Glad to see the Punisher getting a shot in the MCU.

Look.

Punisher might have been edgy and cool when he was created, and for a while after that, but now? He's just boring.

Are we really going to start another argument about other people's tastes here? Just ignore it.

Anyway...stoked about this. Thematically he's a really good contrast to what they were building with Matt in Season 1.

I agree, and also disagree. Look, a well-written Punisher has the possibility to be just as compelling as any other character in the Marvel universe.

Or, and I'm just throwing this out there, he's a fascinating exploration of the mind of a vigilante killer and how demented a criminal killer eventually becomes in a case of He Who Fights Monsters, as well as the thin line between "killing for justice" and "killing for sport".
