Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Will there be more Cap movies? So far they seem to be settling into doing trilogies for their series.

<shrug>

Everything after Infinity War is an unknown, nebulous blob of uncertainty - at least to us. But if there is a continued Captain America presence after that point, it's likely going to be someone besides Steve Rogers.

[up]Honestly, even if Steve lays down his shield, I am not ready for someone else taking it up. Captain America is for me not just a guy with powers. It is Steve's personality which makes him Captain America. He is not really replaceable, no matter what they did in the comics.

Considering that Chris Evans wants to direct, it will be hard for Marvel to convince him to do another Captain America movie, and to be honest, I don't think that it will be needed. There are so many other characters which can be explored.

BTW, Age of Ultron has now knocked Harry Potter out of the top five of the highest grossing movies and is now playing catch-up with Fast and Furious 7.

A popular theory amongst fans I've seen is that Grant Ward will be the MCU's version of Taskmaster.

When the show first started, I also liked the idea of Ward becoming Taskmaster for some reason.

This article loses me halfway through, but it did bring up a question.

Does Black Widow need her own film?

Need? Probably not. Should she get one? Hell yes.

Yes, she should get her own film. It really doesn't matter what it's about.

I think it's because he's also associated a lot with Deadpool, who is owned by Fox (because Deadpool is associated a lot with the X-Men).

But then again, Taskmaster first appeared in Avengers #195 and has primarily been an Avengers villain, so Marvel should have the movie rights to him completely.

This. Deadpool gets around a lot. If everyone Deadpool has ever interacted with were owned by FOX, Marvel wouldn't be able to make movies at all.

Taskmaster Movie?

When he's not being a killer mercenary, Taskmaster tends to teach. He's operated his own school where he taught aspiring supervillains the skills they would need to excel at supervillainy, and he did the same thing in reverse at Camp Hammond during Avengers: The Initiative, teaching Fifty-State Initiative Recruits the skillsets to make them superheroes.

With that in mind, "Taskmaster's School for Aspiring Supers" could make for a fantastic action-comedy. He's rarely had his own book, but he has a great premise.

Does Black Widow need her own movie?

Nobody needs a movie. Not one character has to have a movie. There is no correct answer because the question is wrong.

Nobody needs a movie.

I'm sorry, but you are wrong: Squirrel Girl needs a movie. (With guest appearances by Chipmunk Hunk and Koi Boi.)

Ms. Marvel needs a movie also.

Could we get a "Squirrel Girl & Ms. Marvel" movie?

"We're home, Chewie."

That's the point.

There are all kinds of characters who it would be glorious to see in a movie for all kinds of reasons. Characters like Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America. Nobody ever needed a movie for them. The world would not have stopped turning if they didn't get a movie. They got movies because movies featuring these characters were strongly desirable.

Black Widow is the same. If you ask the question, "Does she really NEED a movie?" the answer is no, but it ignores the fact that nobody else who got a movie really NEEDED one either. The MCU itself was never needed, and within the MCU, there is not a single character who the MCU couldn't have happened without. Not even Tony Stark.

Fans don't want a Black Widow movie because it's needed. They want it for the same reason they wanted Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel. They want it because they love the character and want to watch a movie starring her.

[up][up]I agree....also, a Black Widow movie could cover the Spy genre, which is kind of covered in the TV shows, but not in the scale a movie could do it. So a Black Widow movie might not be needed, but it would be a good addition to the MCU.

You know, by the same logic, nobody needs movies. They are entertainment only. People only need three things: shelter, clothes, and sustenance. But then we get to the whole "what about art and science" debate and nobody wants that.

In conclusion: what were we talking about? Oh, right, Black Widow.

The main reason so much attention has been paid to the Black Widow movie is that prior to that, Marvel's films really didn't have very many female heroes. So the burden of any discussion about the lack of female superhero films or lack of merchandise inevitably fell on her shoulders.

Think about it like this. There's a decent argument to be made about how someone like Captain Marvel was a better fit for a solo film since she's had a much longer history as a solo character, actually has something of a rogues gallery, and fits with the overall cosmic plan for Phase 3. But do very many people outside of comic fans know who Captain Marvel is?

Probably not, or at least not to the degree that they do Black Widow. That will obviously change once the movie actually comes out (just like it did for the Guardians) but right now there's still so much focus from the mainstream about the lack of a Black Widow movie because until just a month ago, she was the sole female Avenger in the entire movie franchise. It's understandable that she takes so much precedence in these discussions and articles despite there arguably being better suited candidates for a movie.

[up][up][up] Which is also why we needed a Nick Fury movie. Can you imagine how rad that'd be? Especially if they based it on Jim Steranko's run? It'd be the 60s spy movie to Winter Soldier's 70s political thriller.

And we'd get to see Sam Jackson doing this, which would definitely put it in the top ten movies ever made.

[up][up]Which is exactly why I would have preferred a Black Widow movie first. There is so much riding on a female lead Superhero movie. If Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel fail, we are back to square one...or even worse off. Natasha on the other hand is popular and played by one of the few actresses whose name has become a draw for the audience. Even a bad movie with her would most likely make a decent box office which is, in the end, what counts the most for the studios.

I disagree that nobody needs a movie. I think certain characters like Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America are important enough to the comic mythology that giving them their own movie helps establish key elements of the universe.

Why is it that with Cap people are like "contracts are for X movies so more Chris Evans after Infinity War are unlikely," but with Scarlett Johansson it's "Black Widow needs a solo film" even though she also has a contract that's probably up after Infinity War like the other Avengers?

That's an idea that, while cool, is hampered by the fact that Samuel L. Jackson is in his late sixties. Doing a stunt like that might literally kill him.
