Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Yes, what I said is usually code for "would you care to elaborate as to why you found it good?".

Is it?

Usually when I see people say stuff like that it's just so they can be like "no, you're wrong."

Wait, Galactic Storm takes place before East/West coast thinger?

I thought that split happened after Secret Wars and was more of a 'we have too many people plus we think hawkeye can carry a book' thing.

I find it interesting that Operation Galactic Storm was actually a big blunder by Immortus who was influencing the Avengers to be xenophobes so they'd go home and yell at people to get off their lawns and stay out of space so they wouldn't become fascist space cops but oops he overestimated and made the Avengers xenophobic to the extent of 'stab it in the brain'

Ah, furious retcons. You sustain me.

Yes, what I said is usually code for "would you care to elaborate as to why you found it good?".

Good characterization, good art, good dialogue, good story. If the only thing you read is that one scene where Thor beats up the Absorbing Man, you are missing out. There is a lot more to it.

[up][up]Nope; Galactic Storm happened before the East Coast/West Coast slipped, not after. West Coast was already a thing long before GS.

Yeah, in the denouement to Galactic Storm, Cap is considering quitting the Avengers because being on the losing side of his argument with Iron Man made him feel like this world doesn't need heroes like him anymore. It's resolved by them splitting the team instead.

The West Coast team ended up folding about a year after Galactic Storm, though. The main team were kind of dicks about it.

Huh? The ongoing series ran from 1985 to 1994, which is nine years. Yes, it was preceded by a four issue mini-series, but the West Coast Avengers still stuck around for a good while.

Galactic Storm was the early 90's I believe. 92 or 93 I think.

Well, then, the West Coast Avengers really preceded Operation: Galactic Storm. They started in 1984.

I know I wasn't saying they didn't, just that someone asked if they were started by Galactic Storm when they were already nearing the end of the title when Galactic Storm occurred.

Curse you, Wizard Magazine!

On a related note, Mark Waid was once asked if he ever missed Wizard Magazine. He says, "Yes, whenever I need toilet paper."

I actually kind of liked those.

Probably because it was my only exposure to the Avengers at the time.

And hey, jacket over spandex does work sometimes.

Speaking of Mark Waid, here is what he said about what makes a great comic book:

A great comic book story takes advantage of the medium. It remembers to be visual at all times, even during the "talky bits." The words/dialogue are a useful buttress to the story, giving depth and additional meaning, but it still should tell a visual story.

And here some advice to those searching for publishers to pitch ideas to:

My advice is for writers to find artists (and vice-versa) through the 'net and post their own material online. If it's good, you'll find an audience and that'll help you find a publisher (or help them find you) much more efficiently than the old method of blind submissions.

It also appears superspeed is his favorite superpower.

I'm a little late here but.....

But Old King Thor is awesome. How did you not like King Thor?

I hear he was a merry old soul.evil grin

~ducks a brick~

Moving on, dumb old me just realized that Hank Pym being retired from active heroing in the new Ant Man movie mirrors that time in the comics where he gave up active heroing and became a scientific advisor to the team. Basically Hank Pym, super scientist.

So not only did they find a way to avoid both of his long term Never Live It Down moments (Jan slapping and Ultron building) but they managed to still be true to the character at the same time.

Nice job Marvel.[tup]

[up][up][up]Someone did a really good retrospective on that era and said he and others remember it fondly because for a lot of people that was legitimately their first exposure to the Avengers in the 90's. They were on all the trading cards, guest-starred in a few of Marvel's cartoons, and even had their own video game.

It's such a weird snapshot of Avengers history because could you imagine today someone making an Avengers fighting game that ignores people like Hawkeye, the Hulk, Thor, and Iron Man while highlighting people like Hercules and Sersi?
