Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Hulk is either DK or Bowser.

Ok, who let Light Yagami in here?

Would Thor be Palutena because deity? Or Pikachu because electricity? Or De De De because hammer?

One could make an argument for Hulk being Little Mac.

[up]I'd say Dedede. Not just hammer, but also royalty. And perfection.

  • Captain America - Mario is the central hero and could wield a Bumper like a shield, but Captain Falcon fits the aesthetic a little more.
  • Iron Man - Samus
  • Thor - King Dedede with Pikachu inside the hammerhead.
  • Hulk - Donkey Kong
  • Black Widow - Greninja
  • Hawkeye - Link
  • Scarlet Witch - Zelda
  • Quicksilver - Sonic
  • Vision - Mega Man
  • War Machine - Falco
  • Falcon - Pit

  • Ultron - ROB

How is Falco Warmachine? I mean to be fair I can't think of one that fits more but still.

Also I say Zero Suit Samus should still be Black Widow even though Samus is Iron Man. Damn the time paradoxes!

Ultron is very unlikely to be gone forever. What would have prevented him from downloading to a random machine and cutting it's connections to the net?

Vision set up parental controls to keep him off the internet.

Regarding the HISHE: Seriously, the only reason this movie "works" is because Ultron was the stupidest. Fucking. Villain. EVER.

I don't really see Ultron being that stupid. His plan is very straight-forward.

Let's not forget that Ultron is insane. There are numerous theories as to why (I like the one that he's both the evil AI from Loki's Staff and Tony's peacekeeping AI at the same time, resulting in absurd attempts to justify his own contradictory actions), but the insanity isn't up for debate. Remember his interactions with Klau? He's planning on wiping out all of humanity, but takes the time to pay a man for his services. And then when he accidentally cuts his arm off, he desperately apologizes and promises they can fix it somehow.

With regards to paying Klau—it might just be "paying him is easier than the inevitable fight that will ensue if I refuse", rather than "I legitimately believe this man should be compensated."

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Not really going to cover everything wrong with his plan, but it's a good thing the meteor wasn't remote controlled. And every Ultron body was in Sokovia.

If you were going up against the Avengers, wouldn't you want all your soldiers to be fighting them?

I find it very unlikely every single Ultron was in Sokovia. He probably left one behind as insurance.

Details on the Ant-Man suit.

Well the exact details/goals of his plan changed several times. At one point it's trying force humanity to better itself and evolve, the next it's just Kill All Humans. Keeping Klaue alive and happy (well relatively) could have helped him in whatever new world order he wanted before changing his mind.

I tend to find the "Ultron is insane therefore does dumb stuff" argument less and less compelling every time I hear it. Mainly because there's little justification for it. Loki was insane and made dumb decisions, but I can buy that he would be so dumb as to try to yell at the Hulk because of the culture he's been brought up in and because of the time he's spent lost in space feeding his resentment. Ultron, however, has all the accumulated knowledge on the Internet and the power of a cosmic supercomputer within him. I could buy that he would be so ruthlessly logical and without conscious as to destroy humanity. But I didn't buy him repeatedly failing the Evil Overlord List by mistakes he's "witnessed" previous baddies like Loki make.

He didn't see the need to leave drones behind as insurance since being able to escape and hide in the internet made him functionally immortal. And even if he had backups, Vision burned him out of the internet, limiting him to just the drones he had with him in Sokovia.

Now, once the battle started he should have maybe sent one away to be an emergency escape, but I guess that's what the damaged one Vision finds was in the end, albeit unintentionally.

[up]There was nothing unintentional about it. Ultron uses the "it loos like you got me, but I have still a back-up" already twice at this point.

The implication is that Vision is able to follow him online.

Sorry, that was worded poorly. I meant more that he didn't deliberately send that drone off on its own, it's the badly-damaged one that Captain America threw off the side.
