Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The important thing for the MCU is that the concept is strong. They can always skip whatever doesn't work and do a good adaptation of the character, as long as there is anything interesting about him or her.

So I watched Age of Ultron again and there are still details I didn't notice before. Like, did anyone ever pay attention to what the two scientist are doing in the background when Tony is figuring out who the guy who changes the nuclear codes is?

Also, upon watching it again...I am pretty sure that the dialogue between Black Widow and Ultron was longer before the cuts. There is a very strange moment in it when Ultron starts monologueing out of nowhere about his plans. To me it looks like there was originally more text immediately beforehand, most likely involving Black Widow manipulating him into talking.

He also jumps very abruptly from talking to her casually and treating her like his Replacement Goldfish to intimidating her into the cage. Like, if he always wanted her in the cage, there's no reason she couldn't have woke up in the cage.

So for the Spiderman film do we have any information plot wise? I admit personally I'd love to see Mysterio return, though that's probably '90s cartoon nostalgia.

  • Young Peter Parker.
  • Not a origin movie but maybe a montage at the start.
  • Also an animated movie that might be in the MCU?

Was the animated movie confirmed to be the same thing as the MCU one? I thought that was just another idea Sony was working on.

They are working on a live action movie and a animated one but we don't know if the last one is in the MCU or not.

Edit: Stan Lee is done with his CW cameo.

I thought it was already pretty clear that the animated one is an independent project.

Mysterio would be great for a movie because come on. His whole thing is movies and special effects.

I don't know if Mysterio has the 'scope' that tends to be favored for movies though.

Which is kind of a shame, that the need for the epic excludes some fun villains.

Hmm...I suppose 3 villains is too much, but what if you had two working as partners?

Kraven and Mysterio? At least one version of Kraven I've seen has him start out as a celebrity.

Shouldn't Kraven work with Chameleon?

But scope?

Like, these days supervillains have to be trying to destroy the city or kill a bunch of people or I guess trying to kill the superhero while destroymurdering the city to justify a movie.

Someone make a superhero heist movie. Villain plots to steal something big and flashy; hero stops him. I know I'd watch the hell out of that.

Other way around. You wanna be rooting for the thieves in a good heist movie.

I actually think Sinister Six had potential to be a good movie, it's just that the specific take Sony was interested in would not have worked. They should not have hinged the whole thing on a character as loathsome and unsympathetic as Reboot!Harry Osborn.
