Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up]I am not very good with how English pronunciation transliteration works, but in this interview this issue is addressed (at about 6:40), and it seems to me it is clearly a 3 syllable name.

I may be wrong, but I don't think anyone in that interview is Muslim, so HigherBrainPattern is probably the person you'd want to defer to here.

Wilson is a Muslim convert. I'd expect her to be decently fluent in Arabic. And it makes sense, since Kamala is a variation on Kamal which is pronounced similarly.

Whelp, guess that's what I get for assuming based on a name. My bad.

[up][up][up]Uh, the interviewed is a Muslim. She is also the author, so I am reasonably sure she knows what she is talking about.

Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is awesome, everyone should read it. Even if you don't like the recurring joke of how Squirrel Girl can beat up everyone, this book actually gives reasonable explanations of how she is able to defeat, like, Galactus (she befriends him and finds him an uninhabited planet to eat).

[up]She's basically been described as a Silver Age Comics character that didn't get the memo that she's now in the Modern Age of Comics.

Squirrel Girl's novelty wore off long ago. Contrived explanations for how she beats everything and everyone do not make her more funny, they just highlight how desperately her one-note is being milked.

She peaked when she beat Dr Doom that one time by having squirrels sabotage his equipment. It was all downhill from there.

[up]I take you haven't read her solo series, yes? Or even heard about it much, if you think her "one-note" is being desperately milked.

That was her first appearance. So I take it you haven't read anything else with her in it.

In any case, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is hilarious and awesome and everyone should read it.

My point.

I haven't read Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, but I know it features Galactus calling Thanos a tool, so no matter what you think of Squirrel Girl, it has that going for it.

They're not contrived though. It's not like she has "beats everyone" as a superpower or anything.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

I can shoot lasers from my eyes and create and destroy life at will so obviously talking to squirrels is not that big of a deal.

I DID NOT COME HERE TO DISCUSS LINGUISTICS, I CAME HERE TO KICK BUTTS AND FEED ON LIFE ENERGY. AND I CAN DO BOTH WHENEVER I WANT. BECAUSE I'M GALACTUS.

I like how there's a box labelled "Nuts (tree)" and one labelled "Nuts (misc)".

That's a very important distinction to make.

The writing is good but God I wish the art wasn't so distractingly Gonk all the time. Sometimes it's cute, other times it's Accidental Nightmare Fuel. Especially when it comes to male faces.
