Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Hey, there was that black guy who played Bubbles in The Wire! He was on the show! For about ten minutes and then he died, but still!
Daredevil did have Rosario Dawson and Vondie Curtis-Hall, which is good. Although Curtis-Hall's character died. And all the Asian characters were evil. And the one Latino character died, too.

I don't think it has anything to do with the setting but Hayley Atwell has said they are discussing how to diversify the cast in Season 2 because it sounds like they heard the complaints about the first one.
I think it has less to do with LA somehow being more diverse and more to do with the reality of them not taking that into account before people started pointing it out while Season 1 was running (by which point it was really too late to do anything about it).

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with a more diverse cast, just so you know, quite the opposite. I'm surprised there were as many Asian people in the first season, including someone working for the SSR, considering the historical attitude towards Chinese people even into the 1960s, and the tendency for those of us who were here to self-segregate anyway until more recently.
Also I'd really appreciate it if you dropped that snide passive-aggressive attitude towards people even when they agree with you. It's quite unpleasant.

Given Atwell's behavior on Twitter I don't think it's so much that they didn't realize so much as she's going to get to say "I told you so" quite a bit now.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.I think the complaints were overstated as there were a fair amount of minority actors with names and lines on the show, but it more stood out because the characters never mentioned racism at all in the episodes despite all the discussion of sexism. I'm fine with what we got, but any improvement is still a good thing.

,
Yeah, the SSR had Chinese and Hispanic members (though they would've counted as white back then), one of the Howling Commandos was black, and some of Howard's girlfriends were non-white. Also the black crime boss and the black policeman which is surprisingly not a case of Black Vikings. It's true there's a lack of non-white people in positions of authority outside the criminal sphere, but that really shouldn't be surprising.

I think that it simply didn't fit into the story to address the race question in the first season. I think they always intended to tackle the theme
the club owner two of the women living in the hotel
The servant of Roxton
The two agents who went to russia

Yes "always" in this miniseries with a major actor that was until recently thought to basically be a one-time deal
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.
Oh, right.
So, that's four one-shot characters and a few ladies in a montage. Yeah, I figure that's a fair amount.
Also Asian definitely didn't count as "basically white" in the 40s. I dunno about Hispanic.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Oh, good, then it's relevant here! Because I just finished it and it was awesome. The issue of JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER, PEOPLE! notwithstanding.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.RENT, or as I call it, AIDS the musical.
Seriously, it gets a lot less fun after the seventh or eighth time you watch it and realize all but two of the characters are dead as doornails.
My various fanfics.*desperately tries not to derail the conversation by shitting on rent*
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Like, the only people who get out of that thing alive are the two characters everyone shits on for being lame and straightlaced squares.
My various fanfics.Oh, come on Wack'd.
I love Rent, how can you not love Rent?
I mean, I know it probably gets a lot of LGBT stuff wrong, and Angel is almost definitely very problematic, but... I love it!
Like, you realize the whole point of the play is that that doesn't matter? It's about learning to accept what little time you have and enjoy it for all it's worth.
