Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Nononononono it's okay see it just so happened that the six most qualified folks for the role all happened to be white dudes

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

I really don't want to come off as racist for asking this...

But why would people want Peter Parker to not be white when he's always been white?

Also, isn't it weird that out of the 6 candidates, only 2/6 of them have pages on TV Tropes?

Because the MCU has been bad with diversity and some people were annoyed that the Spider-Man reboot consequently delayed the two MCU movies that were finally not gonna be about the adventures of white guys. So if we were gonna get a third attempt at a Spider-Man franchise some were hoping they'd at least cast a more diverse lead.

lso, isn't it weird that out of the 6 candidates, only 2/6 of them have pages on TV Tropes?

Er...no? Not really. TV Tropes isn't Wikipedia. Most of the time a celeb has a page here it's because they were in something geek-related or are so iconic that they end up being referenced a lot in the trope pages.

Peter Parker is meant to be the everyman.

The largest populations in New York are Jewish, black, asian, and some hispanic. Peter Parker as a white man is so far from representing the New York everyman it's almost funny.

There's no reason to keep Peter white and the MCU needs all the diversity it can get. I think a latino Peter would work pretty well.

There's no need to rehash the entire discussion. They asked I gave them the gist of the argument.

Peter has always been white because of when he was written. Doesn't mean he always needs to be white. Or always be Peter for that matter.

Kamala Khan is basically the new Peter Parker. She also doesn't have five movies already under her belt.

Plus: Lockjaw as supporting cast.

Plus also: Her starter villain was an evil (?) millennial-bashing cyber-Edison clone with a cockatoo head.

I thought Caramel Corn is the new Captain Marvel?

No, caramel corn is a sweet treat that can be enjoyed during a variety of circumstances.

It's almost like this is a topic that's important to people. And representation in media is a serious fucking issue.

It's almost like we wouldn't have to have this conversation if Hollywood stopped hiring white dudes for every. Fucking. Role.

Speaking of jokes about Kamala's name I am super-impressed it took them fifteen whole issues to do a Wrath of Khan joke. I'm not sure I could've been that patient if I was writing the book.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

2018 is such a long time to wait for Carol.

At least there's going to be some Aka Jessica Jones soonerishly.

[up][up][up][up]If we're counting TV then we already have Agent Carter. I'm not really bothered by the TV shows. Agent Carter was good, AOS has a decently diverse ensemble cast, Daredevil stars a disabled person, and two of the other upcoming Netflix shows also star minorities. I just wish the movies were making more of an effort.

Daredevil stars a disabled person

Charlie Cox plays a disabled person, but he is not disabled himself. Unless you were talking about someone else on the cast, but I don't know who.

Also, those set pics show Jessica in the garbage. I wonder if that will be a recurring motif? All the Defenders into the garbage!

There've been calls to make the cast more diverse for the second season of Agent Carter. Makes sense if it's going to take place in Los Angeles, as there was a large population of somewhat respectable professional black performers Peggy can interact with.
