Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

But that would be one battle and if it were just for one battle then it would seem like they had Widow use the hammer just for the sake of her having a moment in the limelight

Yeah. Exactly. I am in total favor of giving Black Widow a ton of limelight moments. I want her to have all the limelight moments.

Her and Nebula and Peggy Carter.

Man. Imagine if we had a solo Black Widow movie, and, like, that was the big climax.

Okay, it might take a little bit away from her having her own story by making her big moment all about something from Thor, but just imagine!

They find the Time Stone but trip and drop it into Peggy's grave, causing her to come back to life and de-age to her young self so she can team up with Black Widow to resolve a thing.

I would like to say that the fact that the fact that Natasha is aware that she's done many horrible things in the past and is actively trying to atone for them means a great deal. That could be used as a justification for her to be worthy.

[up] See, if this was the comics, we could have an entire series starring the time-traveling duo of Peggy Carter and Natasha Romanov.

More plausibly, we could at least have Peggy still running S.H.I.E.L.D. and mentoring Nat when she defected to the good guys, in a hypothetical Black Widow film.

Having experience with Black Widows might make her more or less trusting of her, though.

If you put Mjolnir in a tree of course it's going to be held up in the tree. Just like if you put Mjolnir down on top of Loki it's just going to rest immovably on his chest, not punch a hammer-shaped hole through him.

Ah, but the elevator is moving upward. Could Loki move upward? He could not.

Therefore, elevator = worthy.

[up][up]Which brings me back to my initial point.

The new Avengers team at the end of Age of Ultron should have been Cap, Widow, Falcon, Vision, War Machine, Scarlet Witch, Elevator, and Darcy's Coat Hanger.

Re: Widow of Thunder. Mjolnir's worthiness can be utterly destroyed by some guy whispering a mean thing into your ear, so whether the wielder believes they are worthy is clearly a factor. Does Nat consider herself worthy?

Wait, that wasn't Wakanda in the movie?

But... they mentioned it by name.

I mean, I'm glad because it means maybe Wakanda will actually be as technologically advanced as it should be, but that is confusing.

Yeah, they mentioned Wakanda by name. As the language that the brand on Klaue's neck was.

They didn't say that was where he was hiding, and in fact that wouldn't make much sense at all. They never went to Wakanda.

I guess I just wasn't paying attention. I heard Wakanda and got excited and didn't listen for a bit.

@Eagal: I didn't even look at the mine, but if it is futuristic I'll totally take it as a good sign. Thanks.
