Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

In the case of Gamora vs. Nebula though that one made quite a ton of sense from a thematic standpoint.

I feel like if they were to use Sin she'd have to be either changed to the Red Skull's granddaughter or just a fan of his. She'd probably also be pitted up against Sharon Carter as a foil to her connection with Peggy.

What's she done in the comics other than jack Thanos' swag swipe the Infinity Gauntlet?

I don't care I just want more of her and her awesome lines.

"Of all our siblings, I always hated you the least" is one of my favorite lines from that movie. And that's saying a lot; GOTG was a damn quotable movie.

I just realized my dream Marvel movie would be a Black Widow movie in which Natasha uses Mjolnir to fight Nebula. And also Peggy Carter is the new Captain America somehow.

Oh, and they'd do the thing! Have I told you guys about the thing? Lemme tell you about the thing. There is a specific scene that I want to see happen in a Marvel movie at some point.

So the Avengers are in a big city-wide fight, like they do. There's people/aliens/robots/alien robot people they need to fight in some high-up place (on top of a building, in a helicarrier, etc), and they need to get there fast. So what happens is Thor (or in my dream movie, Nat-Thor) spins Mjolnir and then throws it towards the place they need to get up to, then Hulk jumps up, grabs onto the hammer, rides the momentum all the way up, and then starts wrecking people OH MY GODS I WANT THIS SCENE TO HAPPEN SO BAD IT WOULD BE SO COOL.

Tenuous, but... isn't Kang connected to some guy named Rama-Tut, who's a descendant of Reed Richards?

Kostya (Unlucky Thirteen)
#35138: May 28th 2015 at 5:58:39 PM

True but that should put him in the same boat as the Twins. Kang is far more connected to the Avengers so at worst they should only be unable to use his Rama-Tut incarnation.

I always felt Gamora vs Nebula was a good example of a female villain for a heroine that didn't feel like a Designated Girl Fight, because it was well established that Nebula's adversarial relationship was a major part of both of their characterization and their relationship with Thanos, and would thus continue to be so past the movie (much like Loki with Thor). So she felt more like an archenemy, rather than a woman on the Big Bad's team who was only there so the woman on the side of heroes will have someone to fight.

And that Gamora was involved with fights with both the other heroes and other villains, and that Ronan was established as being a major villain to all of them rather than just a few members, who required all of them to defeat.

Edot: NVM on the paragraph that was here. That is, there was never a paragraph here. Paragraphs don't exist.

Kang's real name is Nathaniel Richards, the same as Reed Richards' father.

As far as female villains go, I want to know what the hell Madame Gao is.

Kang was originally a Fantastic Four villain named Rama-Tut, who debuted a year before his Kang incarnation.

Again this just goes to show how confusing this whole thing is because there are other characters who originated in the FF that Marvel can absolutely use.

[up]Like the Inhumans, Black Panther, and Klaue. I think as long as they avoid Rama-Tut they should be fine. Kang was never a major FF antagonist.

The best part about Kang's convoluted and entirely ridiculous backstory is that you get instances of 'stop hitting yourself' from him every now and again.

[up][up]The thing is I don't believe the full text of the licensing agreements has ever been made public. It's possible that a lot of supporting characters and villains were explicitly listed as being part or not part of the package. Or the rules that determine who can use which characters are more complex then what book they first appeared in.

Which is probably why we have weirdness like both Fox and Marvel being able to use Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, and apparently Marvel being able to use regular Skrulls but not Super Skrulls, and Fox being able to use Super Skrulls but not regular Skrulls.

Wouldn't Mjolnir sense Hulk's unworthiness and plummet to the ground, like how it basically told Quicksilver to fuck off? If Hulk grabs Mjolnir, he won't be wrecking anything except his own stupid face.

[up][up]I'd figure it'd be the opposite. Like, if Thor, Nat, or the Vision grabbed it they'd drag it down because they can effect it. Hulk can't effect it, so the hammer would just ignore his existence and keep trucking.

[up]Like that.[nja]
