Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Black Widow was a villain at one point, wasn't she? Like, seriously a villain. Not an anti-villain or Punisher-style anti-hero?

The shows have had a solid track record with their female characters on both sides, partly because of the format. As for female villainesses, so far I can think of Deathbird, Mystique, (Dark) Phoenix, Madelyne Pryor, Callisto, Selene, Lady Deathstrike, Cassandra Nova, maybe Spiral (though I mostly just know her from the old Capcom games), Amora, and Morgan Le Fay. Only the last two are non-X-men related.

If we count AOS, then there's also Lorelei.

If they're looking for female villains another viable one is Monica Rappaccini, the head of A.I.M.

Off the top of my head for villains they actually have access to, there's Titania, if we ever get She-Hulk. Enchantress is a possibility, but I'm certain the third movie will either be Surtur or Jormungandr. There's also the second and third Beetles - I think the third one has a really cool niche, especially, so I'd love to see her in the MCU. Songbird was once a villainess, and if we ever get a Thunderbolts film she should definitely be a member.

Lots of Marvel's major female villains have been Femizons at some point, which makes their page a handy list of ones who might make it to film.

What? George Harrison and Ringo Starr were villains?

I should have known.

Enchantress is such a prominent villain that I'm actually kind of shocked she's yet to appear.

Ditto Moonstone and Songbird though the latter would possibly be an Anti-Hero since she ended up reforming.

[up]There's an armored villain called Beetle. He's like evil Iron Man. He eventually reformed and two of his successors were women.

Most of the well-known supervillains are male, unfortunately.

Seriously though. Femizon.

Why...like, why would you add "fem" to a word that already exclusively applies to women? It just...-sigh-

I don't know how I forgot them but there's also the Red Skull's daughter Sin and Madame Masque.

Its not clear how it will ultimately shake out but Slott seems to have railroaded Black Cat into just being a villain, no -anti attached.

She was so horrified by that one time she made out with Peter and found out he was sixteen, she had nowhere to go but absolute villainy.

Someone mentioned Spiral. Spiral means Mojo. That would be interesting to see on the big screen. cool

[up][up] Wasn't that just in the Ultimate Universe?

[up][up][up] I think DC also recently did the same thing to Catwoman. Though, granted, DC's been doing that recently to a lot of people, especially Batman villains.

I'd like them to get away from the whole "female villains should only fight female heroes" thing, too.

I think it's only been Guardians of the Galaxy that had that? Haven't seen it elsewhere in the MCU.

KnownUnknown Since: Jan, 2001
#35120: May 28th 2015 at 5:13:24 PM

It's a convention of the genre/industry, not something the MCU invented.

There's also Lorelai in Agents Of Shield, IIRC. And I might be remembering this wrong, but I'm pretty sure Agents 33's only real fights are against either May or Bobbi. Likewise, while the finishing blow ultimately comes from Mr. Hyde, Jiaying's is framed as Skye's problem primarily and the big fight is between the two of them.

[up][up][up]Not quite. They made her a Well-Intentioned Extremist who basically realized the only way to stop Gotham's mobs from callously murdering a bunch of people was to conquer them and run them herself.

Black Cat is a straight villain though.

On the Designated Girl Fight, I agree but I also really wanna see Captain Marvel fight Moonstone.

For a fight? I don't think so. The climaxes of the first two X-Men movies had Wolverine fighting female supervillains, and nobody batted an eye. It worked because it was made clear that they were serious threats to Logan and that their genders were entirely irrelevant.

Wasn't that just in the Ultimate Universe?

I don't know about the main universe comics version, but in every other incarnation I've ever seen Spiral in she's Mojo's go-to-gal.

In Ultimate I don't think she was even connected to Mojo.
