Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Oh, I totally hope that this will happen. It makes so much sense. Plus, he is one of those overpowered character you better get rid off. But until then, I intend to enjoy every second with him.

Something I've really appreciated about the MCU is the fact that they're not entirely consumed with boring action scenes but also with its characters and themes. And the fact that the movies aren't actually "superhero movies" but rather just normal movies that center around superheroes. Unlike, say The Dark Knight, which to me is the modern day codifier of a "superhero movie" (explores themes of good and evil, responsibility, what it means to be a hero, etc.) - the MCU movies don't focus on that as much as they do other stuff. The Raimi Spider-Man movies are also good examples of what I consider to be "superhero movies." Fairly fun movies with themes that are kind of shallow, but they're still alright.

The MCU aren't superhero movies though. They don't have that pretentious angle to it. However, the major downside is that it steal the spotlight of other movies and makes them look unmarketable by comparison, and may unfortunately lead to the downfall of certain actors and actresses' careers.

I feel bad for RDJ. Masterful actor, but he'll go down in history as a guy best known for playing himself as a superhero. Real life Birdman right there.

[up]Honestly, I would worry about RDJ too much. Not only does he get a ton of money, but he has also played other roles for which he will be remembered. Plus, he kind of owes Marvel for even taking a chance on him in the first place. And there is certainly worse for which one can be remembered that spearheading the most successful franchise of all time.

Plus, everyone and their dog currently wants to star in a Marvel movie.

[up][up]He seems grateful though, given the boost it gave his career. Some people prefer being typecast to not being cast at all.

A piece on potential GOTG2 characters.

Yeah. He may be remembered best for his role as Iron Man, but that beats the hell out of being remembered best as a drunk and a junkie who is notoriously hard to work with. Marvel put him on the map.

That's one of the reasons I feel Guardians of the Galaxy is the best of the Marvel movies so far. It has a nominal good vs. evil conflict, and a suitably hammy antagonist, but what it's really about is families... Though not in the "nuclear family" sense, it's about people who've lost their biological family in one way another coming together, a bunch of lonely people forming a family of choice. That's why the "I would rather die with friends" scene is the emotional core of the whole movie, it sums up what it's really about. And the Guardians family is contrasted with Thanos, who does have a non-biological family of his own with his two adoptive daughters, but he treats them so badly both of them end up rebelling against him, and as a result he loses the precious Infinity Stone he was after. I think it's an amazing feat that the movie ends with the bad guy getting defeated not with guns or fists, but with the power of friendship, and yet it isn't corny at all, it's a Crowning Moment Of Awesome!

I guess one of the reason Avengers 2 wasn't so impressive was because it didn't have the sort of emotionally poignant moments of focus GoG had, there were too many character and themes and arcs, they didn't really come together at any point.

[up]@Link:

  • No way Jack is showing up.
  • Death isn't going to show up until IW 1/2 unless we get a scene with Thanos talking to someone while everyone else thinks he's insane. Unless she wants people to see her(like with Lord Mar-Vell in the comics) she can only be seen by people who are dying(like Mar-Vell in the comics), are close to death or Thanos(who has been able to see her since he was a kid).
  • Mantis I could see showing up as an alien. Since the MCU doesn't have Kitty you could have Quill try to get with her unless they try Gamora again.
  • They aren't going to bother getting Bug's rights. They already have most of the team being comedic so having a joker wouldn't add anything.
  • Moondragon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Phyla!!!!!!!!!!!!!(would probably go for Quasar over Martyr btw. We are never going to see the original user so it wouldn't hurt)
  • Adam. Gunn went from saying "Yeah that's his" to "No way!" one week later. They're doing something with him.

If they do end up adding Deadpool to the MCU, I really want them to explore the weird love triangle between him, Death, and Thanos.

Regarding Vision getting his gem ripped out by Thanos, I'm banking on Thanos taking it and seemingly killing Vision in the process, only for him to get back up with the implication that he doesn't need the gem to keep on living (At least not any more).

Fox's X-Men films would have to crash and burn for that to happen - which was entirely reasonable back when the most recent X-movies were The Last Stand and Origins: Wolverine, but with the successes of First Class and Days of Future Past, I don't think Fox will be looking to make a deal any time soon.

That said, if Fox tries to make their Deadpool movie too PG, there is always a chance for a second coming of Origins: Wolverine. To quote Captain America, "Deadpool's not for kids."

I had the thought that Phyla could be introduced as Matyr and sent out to get the Guardians for what they did to Ronan.

And she's a Matyr because if she's caught/killed she's disavowed but hey, good job. We'll sing your praises and etch you onto a matyr's wall or something.

But then she doesn't kill them and joins them instead.

Peter: "Was it my pelvic sorcery?"
Phyla: "Hahah, no. Noooooooo. No."

Things you catch on your fourth time through a film.

During Age of Ultron, when Tony is loading up Friday to be his new Jarvis, we see a few other discs he didn't use. One of them is labelled Jocasta.

I think Friday is a movie thing. Her name is based on the phrase "Girl Friday".

She's kind of similar to a female AI Tony used recently, but that one was very bluntly named P.E.P.P.E.R. They might have felt it would get confusing to have two characters with the same name outside the visual medium.

[up]x4 Friday is from the comics. Someone with a bit more first-hand knowledgeable may correct me, but from my understanding when Pepper stopped being Tony Stark's secretary full time he created the Friday AI to fill her old job.

So can I call the Vision Jarvis? Easier for me, because two different characters having the same voice would drive me nuts.
