Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I remember him from Merlin. His look is too dead-on for young Peter. Hopefully he's good enough to make me care about Parker going through high school a-fucking-gain.

Hey, at least they averted Dawson Casting. While reminding us why it's a thing.

wild mass guessThis is secretly the Formic Queen's plan to rebuild her species. We're skipping over the Spider-Man origin story because we already saw it in Ender's Game. She entrusted him with her last egg, he used it to gain spider powers and build a new Formic nest in New York.wild mass guess

There is nothing confirmed yet. But if it turns out to be true...I wouldn't mind. Never seen him in anything, but he fulfils my main requirement for a Spider-man actor, lithe body and overly long fingers (yeah, I am still obsessed with those). I also wouldn't worry to much about what he looks like now. He is in an age in which the body changes fast, until the movie is made, he will literally grow into a less baby-faced look for sure. And even if he doesn't, it will be refreshing to see a teen played by an actual teen for a change.

I wonder if Butterfield is still going to have that Peter Parker look when he's finished growing, as tends to be an issue with child actors. IMO Andrew Garfield had pretty much the right look for him facewise and buildwise, with the bonus of already being grown up so his looks are fairly set.

I mean, this is still Dawson Casting. At least in a couple of years. I thought that Marvel was looking for a teenage actor that would like, stay a teenager all throughout Phase 3.

I like Asa Butterfield. I think he'll probably make a great Spidey.

[up][up]We are talking about one movie, because even if the actor still looks young, the MCU keeps moving forward more or less in real-time.

[up]x4It's beautiful...

I know it's a Bond Homage, but it is quite similar to The Winter Soldier's credits. Though The Winter Soldier was almost Black Widow 0.5.

Having some of the Agents cast appears makes some sense too. If any film needs to address Coulson's secret return and bring in events from the show, it'd be one about covert stuff within SHIELD, or what's left of it.

This + the recent photos of Chris Evans on set in funeral clothes = Civil War is probably going to be Feels Central.

Also Luke Cage's only code name was "Power Man" to my knowledge.

Well, if they called him Black Power Man it would probably piss some folks off.

[up]Better yet, just take off the 'Man' and call him 'Black Power'. He can team up with Black Panther for a 'socially relevant' 70's buddy-cop show!grin

[up][up]...I would watch that. Maybe not with Black Panther as he's a king and has better ways of exerting influence than going around fighting people, but I like the concept.

[up]Well, we could always just team him up with Iron Fist; they were best buddies in the comics after all. Ooh, ooh! We can rename Iron Fist 'White Iron'! Black Power&White Iron! They Fight Crime!!

...why Brad Bird and Damon Lindeloff? Like, of all the people you could hypothetically have heading up a Black Widow movie...

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Yeah, I didn't really pay attention to who they picked for writer/director/whatever, since I was sure I probably wouldn't know/care for them.

I mean, Bird's fine. Incredibles, Ratatouille, all good stuff. But Lindelof?

And I mean with the general push for female directors to head up women-led movies right now...

(A push that is sadly not being made across the board, but whatever...)

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

See, I always want to engage in the whole "who's a good person for this job" thing, but like, I can't even name any female directors. I can barely name any male directors.

I'm the kinda jerk who's always like "a black Doctor? How about Idris Elba, literally the only black British actor I know of?"

"We're home, Chewie."

You know it doesn't have to be a veteran director. Everyone has go start somewhere.
