Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up]Same. Squirrel Girl is, to me, everything that annoys me about Deadpool without anything resembling justification as to why she isn't long-dead, and I'd rather she just stayed out of the MCU.

You should read the current Unbeatable Squirrel Girl comic. It's written by Ryan "Dinosaur Comics" North and it's hilarious.

Tippy-Toe: What enemies are you talking about? You're the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl! Who doesn't like you?

Doreen: I don't know! Jerks, I guess?

She's not wrong.

Anyway, they set up the recent Galactus arc a lot like the 'squirrel girl just wins because' jokes but the resoultion was much much better.

Anyone notice that every film in Phase 2 has someone losing an arm at one point?

Iron Man 3, Stark lops off Killian's arm during the battle.
Thor 2, Loki pretends to slice Thor's arm off.
Cap 2, Bucky lost his arm and got a metal one.
Guardians of the Galaxy, Gamora hacks off Groot's arms during the first fight.
Age of Ultron, Ultron destroys Klaue's hand.

[up]I doubt anyone's arm will be chopped off in Ant-Man.

The world will look up and shout "Save us", and I'll look down and whisper "Too bad, Waluigi Time" Vote Loki 2016

Yep, someone's arm will be chopped off. Because Kevin Feige is a huge Star Wars fan and it's an homage to Empire Strikes Back.

Also, Coulson got his arm chopped off in Agents of SHIELD.

The Avengers: Cap chops off a Chitauri's arm when beating up one in front of those police officers.

Arms: Don't worry, you have two of them.

Oh, the Empire Strikes Back homage only applies to Phase 2 movies, since EMB is the second Star Wars film. Presumably, after Ant-Man they'll move on to a Return of the Jedi homage. Perhaps Ewoks?

Thanos: Good, good. Your hate has made you powerful. Now fulfill your destiny and take Nebula's place at my side.

Captain America: Never, I'll never turn to the dark side. You failed, Thanos. I am a hero like the Avengers before me.

Thanos: So be it, Avenger. If you will not be turned, you will be destroyed. -electrocutes-

I actually think a scene like that might really happen, except replacing Cap with Thor and Avenger with "proud Asgardian warrior."

Vader being Loki in this instance.

Y'know what'd be hilarious? If Thanos could lift the hammer.

Not because he's worthy or anything, but because he's fucking Thanos.

For a less ridiculous reason, say he has the Reality Gem or something and it allows him to bypass the enchantment on it.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, it could also be a great moment of frustration for Thanos. He beats the living shit out of Thor (along with all the other Avengers) and decides to pick up Mjolnir just to be a dick about it. He doesn't even move it. A battered and bloodied Thor grins and quips he's not worthy.

Cue Thanos flipping his shit upon realizing as powerful as he is, there are some things he'll never conquer.

[up]If they're hoping to see the Winter Soldier return as a villain then they're setting themselves up for disappointment. Also they're completely missing the point of his character in that film. Crossbones makes more sense for what they're proposing.

They have a very specific type of "comic book movie fanbro" vibe that doesn't gel with me. Oh, and some of their writers also take constant potshots at MCU stuff like Agents of Shield and Agent Carter.
