Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Yeah, ever since I thought about it, I've been thinking of a sequence of Carol flying through the sky beating up a bad guy to the tune of "Don't Stop Me Now."

...or perhaps I've seen Shaun of the Dead too much.

So in comic news Lady!Thor's identity got leaked and it's the "so cancer sick she can't move" Jane Foster.

That's certainly interesting.

I'm kind of reminded of Betty Ross becoming Red She Hulk - it brings back an previously discarded love interest by giving her a more direct role in the superhero dynamic.

I am still thinking about in which direction Marvel might go after Infinity War...I wonder if they go for the Secret Invasion storyline. Secret War would be another option, but in Marvel's place I would keep that for the very, very end of the MCU.

It turns out Tony died in the desert. The guy we've known ever since has been a Skrull.

As a matter of fact, the world was invaded by the Skrulls decades ago. The only person who isn't a Skrull is Captain America.

I just imagine Marvel really screwing up and making a movie after which the fanbase is all "what did they do to out favourite character!!!!" If that ever happens they can simply claim the guy was a Skrull the next movie.

I'm sad we lost the Norns. It was a chance to showcase a glimpse of the mystical parts of Thor/Journey Into Mystery instead of the high tech Asgard.

I do hope we can get these scenes back in an Extended Edition or Director's Cut of sort (hopefully with the DVD release because I don't have a Blu-Ray).

A movie? No, they'll just throw that into a new Marvel One-Shot as an indirect apology to fans, and never follow up on it....

lol...I now have a picture of the executives pointing a gun at the farm saying "do what we say or we will shoot!"

Yeah, I really want to see the extended cut...and yet...Whedon knew what length the movie was supposed to have, so he should have tried to keep the story at a reasonable length. I see a lot of things which could have been either cut or rewritten to take less time and that includes Thor's quest. No matter in which version, Selvig didn't need to be there. Thor could simply say that he goes seeking some answers. Cutting out the stupid romance would have also saved a lot of time.

Don't film makers film a lot of extra scenes and then when they're done filming and start editing it all together, do they go "Hmmm, on second thought we don't need this"?

I'm starting to get the impression that the reason I don't like Age of Ultron very much is because what I watched in theaters was the twitching remains of the real movie, which got hacked into little pieces by studio executives.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Seconded. I'd have to go against Joss Whedon and say I liked the first more, but the second wasn't bad. The humor was just hit-and-miss with me. AOU's humor was hit-and-miss but the action, scale, and conflict were more dazzling. Avengers had a bunch more fist-pump worthy moments though.

I think I prefer the first one, but I haven't seen it in a while, so maybe that's just nostalgia.

I want to emphasize that AOU is a good comic book/superhero film and deleted scenes don't severely damage a film unless it robs a greater understanding of its plot.

AOU isn't difficult to understand. I watched it with my sibling who hadn't seen Cap 2/Iron Man 3/or Thor 2, and the only thing I needed to explain was what happened to SHIELD.

[up]I don't think the deleted scenes made the plot impossible to understand, but I think the plot was WAY too rushed and (besides the farm scenes, the party scene, and a few moments in the Quinjet that were mostly there for rushed exposition) rarely took the time to breathe. In particular, I thought Ultron's creation happened so quickly, it was almost stupid.

"Hey, Bruce, we can use this strange magical artifact to power up the Ultron initiative that we've never mentioned, foreshadowed, or hinted at existing before this exact moment."

"Sounds like a plan!"

*two minutes later*

"AAAAAAAAAAH EVIL ROBOT!"

*one minute later*

"Alright, Avengers, Ultron's a bad guy running around being bad. Better go stop him!"

That's how the pacing felt to me. Like the movie was impatient to get to the standard "superhero vs supervillain" dynamic and therefore sacrificed valuable character development and story pacing.

And the thing is, I feel like there are plenty of good comic book/superhero stories that have perfectly fine storytelling and character development. Age of Ultron was a good action flick, but saying it's a comic book/superhero film is like admitting that the whole genre has an inherent, unavoidable flaw, which I don't think is true at all.

(Also, something tells me they'd have a bit more time for Thor's subplot if they'd just cut the Black Widow / Hulk romance. In fact, from now on "cut the stupid romance out" is going to be my default answer to every pacing issue with this movie. I mean, I don't know exactly how many minutes of the movie were dedicated to that subplot, but I know they were too freaking many.)
