Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I'm more upset that MCU Hawkeye's never worn anything close to his classic costume. Just look at that sucker.
Nope. Back in the early 1980's, there was a miniseries by Mark Gruenwald where, at the end, Hawkeye had to use an arrow at point-blank range that produced an incredibly sharp pitch to save his skin, which had the effect of rendering him deaf and needing a hearing aid. It's never really been touched on since, but it still happened.

I believe Heroes Reborn undid it, along with Teen Tony but unlike Teen Tony, Hawkeye's deafness came back although I'm not clear on the mechanics.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersBefore The Reveal that they were HYDRA, I was hoping one of the Quinjet pilots in Winter Soldier would be namechecked as "Danvers" over a radio.
I would kind of prefer if Cap died at the end of Civil War, but Peggy's death would definitely be a gut punch.
Anyway, Age of Ultron thoughts.
So...I saw it with my dad, and he was actually kind of bored with it - he thought there was too much action. He started to fall asleep during the middle, although he woke up when things started to heat up again. While I was pretty engrossed for the most part, I do think he's got a point - there are five different action sequences in the film (the opening Hydra battle, Ultron's attack on the party, the freighter battle that leads into the Hulkbuster fight, the chase after the Vision's body, and the final battle). Now, while there are definitely some calmer moments to give the movie time to breath, not a lot of these are really used for character development - there's some, but quite a bit of it is exposition. Mind you, I still enjoyed it, since I enjoyed seeing these characters interacting, and I did legitimately like the action. My dad also thought that all of the combat banter and Buffy Speak was distracting, and while it didn't bug me that much, I do think they should have cut back on it. He didn't hate the movie though, so that's a plus, and he agreed with me that the "we know they're going to save the world, so there's no stakes" criticism is unfair - that's true of a lot of movies. He did, however, say that he liked the other Marvel movies we saw together (the Captain America movies, Iron Man 3, Guardians of the Galaxy) better, so I suppose the issue is with team-up movies.
...The Black Widow/Hulk romance...I'm not opposed to the pairing on principle, but it doesn't really work here, not the least because it comes up with little build up. I could buy it if it was presented as a brief fling, but everyone seems to treat it as something more lasting, so I don't think that works. I actually don't have much of an issue with Natasha's characterization here (although while the whole "infertility" thing wasn't handled as insensitively as I thought it might have been, I would have just made it so that she didn't think she should have children). I think that if it had just been a friendship between her and Bruce - something like what she and Steve have in Winter Soldier - it would have worked much better.
That aside, I did like the new characters. Ultron isn't quite like the trailers had made him out to be, but he's still fairly intimidating when he wants to be, and can actually be pretty funny. He's a different kind of villain than Loki - while Loki wants things like power, glory and revenge, and acts like an arrogant Manipulative Bastard, Ultron seems to legitimately want to help humanity, in his own way. He utilizes manipulation, but he seems to prefer brute force. Most interestingly, he actually does seem to care about other people, like Wanda and Pietro, who I think he sees as kindred spirits of a sort. I wish we had learned how he felt about them changing sides - there's some good drama there.
Speaking of which, Scarlet Which and Quicksilver are both fairly enjoyable characters. I like them, and can definitely emphasize with him. Granted, they do feel a bit underdeveloped, and Pietro dies, so he probably won't be getting any more but I think that you could probably do something with that for Wanda, maybe in Civil War or Infinity War.
Helen Cho and Klaue aren't in the movie for very long, but I liked both of them, so I definitely hope to see them again.
As for the Vision, I think he might be my favorite new character of the movie. I don't really know what to say, just...every scene with him is great.
Overall, I liked the movie, but it could have been better. Maybe the extended version will help, or maybe it won't - I guess we'll see.
I believe that Tony has a line just before the final battle, asking if Ultron had given himself "a Vibranium cocktail", or something like that. Anyway, I think his last body took quite a bit more punishment than any of his previous bodies (Tony was able to destroy the one he fought in South Africa on his own, while the final one took a triple blast from him, Thor and the Vision, got thrown several hundred feet to the ground by the Hulk, and surived all of that only to get his "heart" ripped out by Wanda - and that's not counting what he took before all of that).
Speaking of survival...
Maybe, but I don't know...it's true that things change in the movie, but...I don't know, the ending doesn't really give me the feeling that "doom is coming", even in The Stinger. Perhaps "change" would be a better word than "doom"
...Unless it was Doctor Doom, but I suppose that won't be something we get for a while. Might be a little late anyway.
Civil War would probably be a good opportunity for a cameo. I mean, if the actress didn't work out, they could always recast her.

Oh God! Natural light!"I was hoping someone would get namechecked Danvers over the radio."
You never use Names or ranks over the radio for security and etiquette reasons. So you use callsigns and Carol's is traditionally Cheeseburger.
I wouldn't be surprised if there is an F-22 hanging out in the background with Cheeseburger painted under the cockpit.

I do hope we don't have to wait all the way until her solo movie to actually see Carol Danvers. Especially since her prior career in the Air Force makes her a perfect character to have an [[early bird cameo]]. Any time the US military has a reason to show up, she can appear without any need to explain her backstory and she can even have a meaningful (if brief) contribution to the story.
At this point I think the only thing holding up her being cast is that Marvel wants the director of her standalone movie to at least sign off on the actress.
