Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Why are there Captain Marvel toys for AOU even though she's not in the movie but not any Black-Widow-riding-her-motorcycle toys?!

So, wait, they released a Captain Marvel toy, but not a Black Widow toy?

...do they just hate Black Widow? Is that it?

Also, how many Scarlet Witch toys are being made?

While sexism definitely comes into it, Captain Marvel's being a more typical hero with a colourful costume and flashy powers probably gives her better chances with toys.

What is the point of making a toy with her when we don't even know how the character will look like? We know neither who the actress will be, nor how the costume will look like, nothing.

[up]I actually thought that this was the reason they added the stupid Tron stripes to Black Widow's costume, so that her action figure would look cooler.

More than likely, that's the problem. Widow's costume is boring.

Addition: Does Carol even have an action figure or any other toy for her out? A Hero Clix statue doesn't count. Or whatever those figures with bases they're stuck on are called.

It's not like the other figurines in that set looked like the movie versions. They were all based on the comics' looks.

Yeah, some toys just take the advantage of timing but aren't really proper movie toys.

[up]x4 Because it helps market the character ahead of time. Now when kids are watching trailers for Captain Marvel in theaters, they can wave their not-hard-earned Captain Marvel toys in front of their parents apathetic faces and say, ' IT'S CAPTAIN MARVEL I LOVE CAPTAIN MARVEL I WANNA SEE CAPTAIN MARVEL CAPTAIN MARVELS AWESOME CAPTAIN MARVEL CAPTAIN MARVEL CAPTAIN MARV—!!!', and after the now furious parent hurls the toy straight at the theater screen out of sheer rage and possibly damaging it slightly, they'll cave in, and will be even more likely to go see Captain Marvel than they were before. It's awareness-increasing advertising, basically.

You know when I was a kid I used to collect action figures of the various Marvel characters. While doing this I got Ms. Marvel, the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, and Tigra. I was considering getting a Black Widow figure to add to my collection and even out the gender ratio a bit but if they're not even going to bother making a toy for her I guess I can't do that.

I mean, I'm pretty sure there are Black Widow toys, just not any of her being rad on her rad bike.

She got two figures from Hasbro, who does the main line, and then like a Bobble Head. Surprisingly she got much more merchandise than Quicksilver, who got almost nothing. This was actually why I suspected he was gonna be the one to die.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

There's quite a few online. I think people feel there's under-representation because they can't just walk into a store and find one. No "Black Widow with motorcycle" that isn't the motorcycle called Black Widow.

[up]Kids don't really do the whole order-online thing, though. They're big on instant gratification. No patience for shipping times.

So if you go into a toy store and you see no girl toys at all, "well we can order one and you can have it in 5-7 days" isn't gonna be a big help. Especially when all the boys get their action figures immediately.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

So what exactly is Ultron in relation to the Mind Gem? Was he just an extraneous AI somehow installed to it? Was he the Mind Gem's consciousness?

Unrelated but I just remembered that there were advertising Ant Man in the previews for AOU. I had to explain to a friend who doesn't read comics why that was funny.

My interpretation was that he was the combination of the AI framework within the Mind Stone and Tony's AI tech and programming.

I think the Mind Gem is at least partially sentient. Ultron is probably an AI based on it.

OK i have a soundtrack question: the dark version of "there is not string of me" is only a trailer thing? I was expecting to be in the soundtrack of the movie but nothing, anyone knows?

[up][up]That's another ting that gets me. I really don't see why they needed to tie the gem in with Ultron's origin. I think Tony should've been perfectly capable of creating a psycho AI without alien involvement.

No idea why it is not on the soundtrack, but the song is actually part of the movie...at least the original version is. For two seconds or so.
