Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I'm curious what they're going to do with Agent Carter this time around. The showrunners said early on that they viewed the One-Shot as the end-all for her TV adventures, but at the same time all the developments of the show make it a strange snapback in terms of status quo, and the early SHIELD era has a lot more storytelling potential.

I think it was mentioned at one point they'd thought of having every potential season in a different decade?

Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters have said that for Season 2, they were thinking of moving locations - having Peggy go to Hollywood or Europe to investigate, instead of staying in New York. That way, they could tell different stories and yet stay within the timeline.

I hope they go to the early days of Shield, when Peggy has to establish her authority. It would be a great shift of dynamics.

Moving her to a different city sounds kind of dumb, mostly because I would love to see Sousa, Thompson and Angie again.

It's generally considered bad form to throw out the entire supporting cast between seasons.

The synopsis for Jessica Jones is out.

"Ever since her short-lived stint as a Super Hero ended in tragedy, Jessica Jones has been rebuilding her personal life and career as a hot-tempered, sardonic, badass private detective in Hell's Kitchen, New York City. Plagued by self-loathing, and a wicked case of PTSD, Jessica battles demons from within and without, using her extraordinary abilities as an unlikely champion for those in need... especially if they're willing to cut her a check."

I don't think they are throwing out the supporting staff at all. They just need to tell new stories.

[up] True. A change in location, depending on how it's handled, might only result in one or two recurring characters dropping out since at lot of them could end up moving to the new location for the same reason Peggy does.

Well, I want to keep the New York setting, but at a different point in Peggy's life.

Seriously, the team-up should be Heroes for Hire, not Defenders.

Daredevil was never a Hero for Hire, though, and he'll be the main draw for the show.

Captain America wasn't a founding Avenger. Things change in adaptations.

Adding a member to the roster is less extreme of a change than stealing the name of a different team entirely.

[up][up][up] I don't think Jessica Jones will be so profit-minded that she won't take a pro bono case if the potential benefits are high enough. Especially if those benefits include things like "New York City will not fall into the ocean".

Not sure how I feel about explicitly setting it in Hell's Kitchen. I think it would be better if each series was mostly set in a different area of New York City (albeit with some overlap), and the Defenders dealt with a city-wide threat.

Both Daredevil and Luke Cage have both been on the Defenders though.

The Defenders is a mostly otherworldy threat(like demons and stuff) team. Heroes for Hire is a street team in NYC.

Yeah, and Molly Hayes has been a Runaway, but if you were to make a movie or show starring Molly Hayes, Patriot, Hawkeye II, Hulkling, Speed, and Wiccan trying to restore the Avengers' name to prominence, calling them the Runaways would be entirely unwarranted.

[up][up][up]Yeah, but never for long. The main four Defenders in the comics are Dr.Strange, Hulk, Nighthawk, and Valkyrie, with Namor and Silver Surfer also getting props for being founding/early members. Sure, Luke and Danny each had their own stints on the team, but they were never that important.

I just don't think Hell's Kitchen is big enough for more than one hero. This is the entirety of its area. Maybe they could make it would be keeping their focus different, but it still feels like a bad start.

Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.

I think the main reason I am not too worried about Civil War and by extension Infinity War is that they stick to the writer team which already did the first two Captain America movies and are responsible for Agent Carter. Granted, they also worked on The Dark World, but as far as I understand it they came into the production late in the game and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that they were responsible for the half of the movie I love and not for the part which feels lacklustre.

I'm also not worried about Infinity War because it's going to be in two parts, so I really doubt it's going to feel as cramped and rushed as Age of Ultron.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

Having Ant-Man confirmed for Civil War is a smart move; it may make people more interested to watch the Ant-Man film knowing it will have ramifications in some way.

Really the Netflix shows feel like The Marvel Knights line to me, but that group of characters never had an in universe name, and Marvel Knights is a little too leaning on the third wall.

Marcus and McFeely did Thor: The Dark World? I thought it was Kyle and Yost who did it (or at least the majority of it).

Hmm, didn't know Marcus and McFeely also did the Narnia films. The two have a pretty solid track record.

So AKA Jessica Jones also takes place in Hell's Kitchen? So does that mean that characters from Daredevil could possibly show up? Like for example, will we see Foggy there?
