Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

In fact, I think the characters of these movies tend to be way stronger than the plots.

That about summarizes Marvel Comics in general.

Did anybody really love Wanda's Heel–Face Turn epiphany?? Like, I thought those moments dealing with her reaction to just realizing how terrible Ultron truly was were awesome.

We just need a three hour epic of all the MCU characters hanging out, wandering around Manhattan, and cracking jokes.

Heck, I'm pretty sure that's the reason Hawkeye retires at the end of this movie. The writers were like, "Well, he's been developed enough, now let's get him out of the way since we don't really need him for the story or anything!"

Uh, he left at the end because the mission was over and he had to get back to his wife and children. And also the movie was over. And he will be back in Civil War. So nope! The writers like him!

There's a few funny comics that are all about the Warriors Three dicking around in New York which they could start with.

Well, if they do that, they need the scene where Spider-Man and Loki are hanging out and eating hotdogs and Loki asks, "What are the green bits?" and Spider-Man says, "Nobody knows."

[up][up][up]Yeah, well, Civil War's gonna have even more characters running around, so I don't know how I feel about that...

[up][up] Holy crap, I forgot they could technically do that now. If Spider-Man gets into a team-up movie where Loki is present, that has to happen.

I've read that issue where Spidey and Loki team up, and I remember it involves Loki having a daughter on earth. If that happened in the movies, the fangirls would go berserk, I bet.

What? I've never heard of Loki having a daughter. I think that's a completely different character.

Loki gave birth to his father's horse in the myths, does that count?

In the myths, Hel/Hela was also his daughter. In the comics, uh, it's a bit different than that.

[up][up][up]He gives the "I'm a Norse god. That's what we do." line. Some supervillianess is possessing his daughter's body or something.

[up][up][up][up] Well, there's Hela, the ruler of Hel. She was canonically Loki's daughter until a retcon a few years ago.

I remember that too.

Loki promised Spidey a favor he could cash in at any time. Sadly, this never came up again, as Loki died and became Kid Loki.

[up] I think Dan Slott said that Spidey cashed it in by having Loki help him move. (I could be misremembering)

Looked at the Civil War Leak. I liked Spidy, but I'm not a fan of some other choices they made. REALLY not a fan

[up][up][up] Holy shit, if that's true that has to happen in the MCU.

For extra fun, it should happen after Ragnarok and be the last time Loki ever appears in the universe.

So...since General Ross is showing up in Civil War, does that mean that we just might see Red Hulk?

[up]You mean the most recent one of Rulk, Deadpool, Punisher, Venom, Elektra, and Ghost Rider?

I don't hate the idea (sounds totes awesome!), but there's a few problems:

  • Deadpool's still owned by Fox, so he's already a no-no.
  • The MCU hasn't really established their takes on Venom, Punisher, and GR. And the closest they got to establishing Elektra is when Matt and Foggy talked about "that Greek girl" from a flashback in Marvel's Daredevil.

Actually, it would be a mashup of all the previous Thunderbolts teams. It would be like a villainous Avengers. Or anti-heroic Avengers. Or something.
